Palin's daughter pregnant: ConfirmedFollow

This deserves its own thread.

Score another one for abstinence-only sex ed.

See, I knew the "zomg she covered up for her daughter's pregnancy" crap wasn't real, because Palin was either pregnanct or wearing a fake stomach in some photos, and a 44 year old is more likely to give birth to a child with Down's Syndrome than a teenager.

On the other hand, yeah. They knew the sh*t was hitting the fan so they went ahead and just did a press release.

I'm not blaming the McCain vetting team for this, because I bet that the poor kid didn't have the guts to tell mom until this weekend.

According to Camp McCain, they knew before they announced her as VP.

She won't. 5 months is too far along for anything but one of those banned "partial birth" abortions that the fundies love to hate.

The same press release also announces that Bristol will carry the child to term, and in addition will marry the father to legitimize the birth. It's all very old school.

I'm wondering how much of it was her decision.

Oh well it's still a black eye for Palin/McCain at least. I'm sure the Hannity camp will spin this in their favor too; something about "showing support for her daughter during this time". But if Obama had a teenage daughter and this happened, they'd be creaming in their pants to talk about how bad of a parent he is, and is that who liberals really want to run the country?

On a more important point, it wasn't me.

If she's as fugly as her mMm. . . Srsly, who the hell finds the ********** goggle monster doable?

I'd rather do Mike than Sarah if a Palin were the only choice Smiley: rolleyes

I'm assuming that Bristol is the older daughter on the right

I'm definitely in. Her face isn't square like her mothers, but that may just be because of her size difference. I don't think she's fat of course, just ya know, curvier.

This actually doesn't work out too poorly for Palin. It increases her standing amongst the pro-life voters, who are the only reason I can see for her even being nominated as VP, and the only people who would get annoyed by a teenager being forced to carry an illegitimate child to term aren't the kind of people who would vote Republican anyway.

The only person who loses here is Bristol Palin.

Yeah but the thing is, she's such a big abstinence-only sex ed advocate and it's apparent it didn't work out too well for her daughter.

Teach children anything you want, it only works if they listen. Plenty of people who know about condom use and safe sex still don't practice it.

I dunno...good parents have children who listen to them about important issues like this though.

Parents can only do so much. At 17, a legal adult in the state of Alaska, the decision making is left up to her. Her parents have about as much control over her deciding to have sex and have a child as they do over how many times she wipes after she takes a ****.

That's what I was thinking as soon as I read

The Article wrote:
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates," the statement concluded.

That's a tough call to make. I wouldn't say that my ex girlfriend's parents were bad, by any stretch. Neither would she. My parents weren't. We took precautions, but birth control isn't 100% effective. It's possible that she was simply using birth control, and it didn't react with her body correctly, or just plain didn't work, and she got pregnant. In that case, she was doing everything right, it just didn't work out for her. And it would look even worse if she showed up at an abortion clinic, than it does with them releasing a statement about her being pregnant and carrying the child to term.

LMAO, my mother is a Health Educator. I knew what could happen, I understood full and well, probably better than most teens. It still comes down to the teen. I was a really well behaved kid, except for the whole pregnancy thing :)

It's doubtful Palin's kid was on The Pill. Fundies consider oral contraceptives to be a form of abortion, since it prevents implantation and "life begins at conception" yadda yadda.

It's possible their condom broke, or they didn't know how to use it properly. (You gotta pull out before it gets flaccid again, guys.)

Pro-life: Forcing your 17 year old pregnant daughter to carry the baby to term and get married to the father whether she wants to or not.

So, I guess if a kid is a psychopathic killer, we shouldn't place any of that blame on the parent either?

My point still stands. I doubt they were readily trying to get pregnant... I doubt they would be so stupid as to have unprotected sex without birth control. There are things that go beyond the participants' control in a situation like this, though.

Only if the parent gave the child the weapons and played subliminal messages saying "KILL EVERYONE!" while they slept.

Seriously, are you grasping for straws?

I dunno, do they have 2 or 3 other perfectly normal, functional children?

Why do you make the assumption that they wouldn't? No 17 year old wants a child. Especially not when your mother's views are so strong, that she'll likely make your life unbearable. I can't fathom how they would not take the necessary precautions.
#25 Sep 01 2008 at 10:49 AM Rating: Good
If you've been told all your life that you shouldn't have sex before your married, that going on birth control will make it so you can never have children, that condoms don't prevent STDs, that you can't get pregnant on the first time from your friends . . . then there's nothing stupid about not using a contraceptive, because nobody told you the truth about what happens when you don't.

Even in the redneck bits of Georgia, my high school gym teacher at Hephzibah High was like, "I'm not supposed to say this but . . . guys, for God's sake, use a condom." That was it. That was the extent of our school's sex ed curriculum.

(I'm kinda glad I left that school after one year. My IQ was higher than the rest of my class combined, I think.)

Because teenagers are much more apt to make poor decisions (especially when horny) than good ones?

You can't fathom how they would not take the necessary precautions? You're really serious? You can't fathom an instance where two horny teenagers would just go at it without taking all the necessary precautions?

I'm not saying I can't fathom how they would make the right precautions (like you are with the opposite view), but teenagers are notorious for being inexperienced and not always making the smart moves (like all human beings)
