RACK this.

The hostess with the moosest
Mark Steyn

Over in the Frumistan province of the NR caliphate, our pal David is not happy about the Palin pick. I am - for several reasons.

First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then to go on to become Governor while having five kids makes it an even more uniquely American story. Next to her resume, a guy who's done nothing but serve in the phony-baloney job of "community organizer" and write multiple autobiographies looks like just another creepily self-absorbed lifelong member of the full-time political class that infests every advanced democracy.

Second, it can't be in Senator Obama's interest for the punditocracy to spends its time arguing about whether the Republicans' vice-presidential pick is "even more" inexperienced than the Democrats' presidential one.

Third, real people don't define "experience" as appearing on unwatched Sunday-morning talk shows every week for 35 years and having been around long enough to have got both the War on Terror and the Cold War wrong. (On the first point, at the Gun Owners of New Hampshire dinner in the 2000 campaign, I remember Orrin Hatch telling me sadly that he was stunned to discover how few Granite State voters knew who he was.) Sarah Palin and Barack Obama are more or less the same age, but Governor Palin has run a state and a town and a commercial fishing operation, whereas (to reprise a famous line on the Rev Jackson) Senator Obama ain't run nothin' but his mouth. She's done the stuff he's merely a poseur about. Post-partisan? She took on her own party's corrupt political culture directly while Obama was sucking up to Wright and Ayers and being just another get-along Chicago machine pol (see his campaign's thuggish attempt to throttle Stanley Kurtz and Milt Rosenberg on WGN the other night).

Fourth, Governor Palin has what the British Labour Party politician Denis Healy likes to call a "hinterland" - a life beyond politics. Whenever Senator Obama attempts anything non-political (such as bowling), he comes over like a visiting dignitary to a foreign country getting shanghaied into some impenetrable local folk ritual. Sarah Palin isn't just on the right side of the issues intellectually. She won't need the usual stage-managed "hunting" trip to reassure gun owners: she's lived the Second Amendment all her life. Likewise, on abortion, we're often told it's easy to be against it in principle but what if you were a woman facing a difficult birth or a handicapped child? Been there, done that.

Fifth, she complicates all the laziest Democrat pieties. Energy? Unlike Biden and Obama, she's been to ANWR and, like most Alaskans, supports drilling there.

Sixth, I kinda like the whole naughty librarian vibe.

***************************************************
Good stuff.

You're retarded if you think Palin's "executive" experience as a mayor of a loltown and the governor of a state like Alaska is somehow leaps and bounds above Obama's experience as a Senator. But I guess you conservatives have to save face somehow. Just admit that she's on the ticket for the sole reason that she has a ****** and looks 100x better than hilary clinton, not because she's any good for the job.....please.

Also, I'm pretty sure your 2nd pic is photoshopped.

Uh, Damien, what experiences as a senator are you talking about? The ones where he spent most of his time running for president? I know Dems are generally dumbsh1ts about their candidates, but to play the experience card on Republicans is about a stupid as you can get. I, for one, would rather have an inexperienced veep who has an opportunity to ramp up her credentials than the guy running the show who doesn't have a clue-- well, unless you call being a community organizer a position that qualifies as being a OJT pressure cooker...

I will give Obama credit where credit is due, however. He kicked the Hellbeast square in the balls and lived to tell about it. I suspect not many men can lay claim to that!

The reality is that he has significantly more experience than pubbies give him credit for. It's only prudent for you to play down this experience, or even better, highlight the inexperience (which is far more voluminous, even if not directly measurable), but facts are facts, and he's got enough experience in a lot of minds to do the job sufficiently.

I'd even be willing to say that his lack of experience in some areas will open up doors for him that someone else might not have. You see, when you've been around long enough, you get accustomed to viewing things at a certain angle. His ability to view things from a different angle might give him the opportunity to make progress in areas that have been stale for years.

Facts being facts are one thing, Ducky, but "enough experience in a lot of minds to do the job sufficiently," counts as opinion, regardless how much you'd like it to be God's-honest, unshakable truth. Once again, jut sayin'.

That said, the second pic is photoshopped.

Umm, tricky? I know you're likely to be a bit confused at this moment, but that is something people call a woman. We realize you haven't come into contact with many of them, if any, but such creatures are necessary for the reproduction of the human race, albeit, we don't hold our breaths in anticipation of you actually having sexual intercourse with said creature and replenishing the trickybeck family line.

Right, I'm not the one that got fooled by a bad cut & paste approximation of a woman.

Totem, exactly how is Palin leaps and bounds more experienced than Obama? I guess being the mayor of a small town in Alaska and being governor for 1.5 years is soooooo much better than the time Obama spent in the United States Senate.

If you're gonna throw out the time he spent running for President, we'll call it even and throw out the time Palin spent abusing her powers as governor to get a state trooper fired, k?

I'd also like to point out that PTA President and councilwoman for the town are not exactly full time jobs. Mayor, okay, I've give her that, mayor for a town that size probably filled up enough of an eight hour workday to justify a full time salary.

However, Obama's state senatorial district was 27 times the size of her town in terms of population. And when you compare apples to apples and who is representing who, you go for quantity, not land area.

I've also heard varying numbers regarding the size of the town; it was around 6,000 when she governed it. It's since ballooned up a bit to around 9,000.

The incoming freshman class at our local university this year is 9500.

She spent time abusing her power to get a state trooper fired? Really, Dame? Where did you see that? I haven't seen a shred of evidence that that is what happened. But go on now, don't let reality keep you from smearing a woman's good name in your desperation to bolster your candidate's chances in November.

I submit to you, cat, that her time spent in public office was far more effective and groundbreaking than the entirety of Obama's in public office. Proof of that you ask? Obama, the product of possibly the most corrupt political machine in the country, did largely nothing. Palin, on the other hand, cut her own party's corrupt operatives and players off at the knees.

Now you tell me, who was more effective in their short time in office?

Just check out the numerous Palin threads, all the evidence and sources are there somewhere.

"my" candidates chances? The fact that you think Palin is actually extremely qualified for the VP spot is proof enough of your extreme partisanism. I was actually pretty undecided about who I was going to vote for, but after McCain picked his VP solely for looks and to "shake things up", I honestly don't think I want him making the big decisions.

McCain stupidly picked an inexperienced VP because she has a @#%^...deal with it.

Just admit that if you looked at Obama's resume/record and Palin's without knowing who they were (or if Palin was a democrat and not a republican), you would be saying the same thing I am, but no, you're choosing to be blinded by party politics. Put it this way..if the election was Biden vs. McCain and McCain had Obama as his VP and Biden had Palin (if their parties were switched obviously), you KNOW you'd be toeing the party line and talking about how great Obama was and "how can some dumb ***** who was mayor of like a 9000 person town be better than a Senator who's served on the Foreign Affairs Committee"

What a sheep; your title is very appropriate
