Yeah, we know. Joph was saying maybe it's just an elaborate fake-out.

Palin's term has not been without controversy. A legislative investigation is looking into allegations that Palin fired Alaska's public safety commissioner because he refused to fire the governor's former brother-in-law, a state trooper.

Palin has admitted that the call could be interpreted as pressure to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, who was locked in a child-custody battle with Palin's sister.

"I am truly disappointed and disturbed to learn that a member of this administration contacted the Department of Public Safety regarding Trooper Wooten," Palin said. "At no time did I authorize any member of my staff to do so."

Palin suspended the staffer who made the call.
"What? That was my... staffer! My staffer who pretends to be me! Bad staffer! Go home with no dinner!"

Oh, hmmm. That would be some extreme wishful thinking on the part of republicans everywhere.

Also, since the obvious connection will be made anyway, it's worth noting that:

Her husband is Todd Palin, an oil production operator on Alaska's North Slope.

Combined with the recent push for ANWR drilling and you get a pretty clear picture of what she brings to the table.

Absolutely. Or Liz Dole, or one of fifty other highly placed GOP women.

If he had picked either of them, or Romney, I'd be worried right now.

I just can't seem to understand this, haha.

You're starting to get the picture. This election is all about the economy and this was a huge move for the drill here/now crowd. Obama & Co. better put together a better energy plan than telling people to keep their tires properly inflated and buy fuel efficient cares if he's going to have any hope of winning.

Quite frankly, a good chunk of Obama supporters would vote against McCain's energy policy because it's stupid. Obama would do just as well with no energy policy at all when compared to McCain.

What's not to understand? She's been on the short list for months. While Romney was the more obvious pick from a "Is he presidential" perspective, there's still the possibility that some nutty religious types might not like that he's not their kind of nutty religion. Also, Obama's choice of Biden was so awful that I suspect it gave the McCain camp the sense that they had more breathing room to pick a more "maverick" type VP choice.

I think the McCain camp is overdoing the "Clinton's voters might come our way and tip the balance" idea with this, but it's not a ridiculous idea. At the least, it takes some of the "historic" aspect of the Obama candidacy off the table. She's also very well thought of in Conservative circles without having the kind of baggage that Joe Biden brings to the other sides choice.

It was a way for McCain to show his maverick side without going too far afield. She balances the Republican ticket in a way that Biden doesn't balance the Dem ticket. She'll draw in conservatives without pushing away exactly the voters that McCain hopes to pick up in the middle (mostly blue collar working class and women). I think that most of you sitting there thinking "who?" haven't been listening to conservative pundits discuss potential McCain VP picks for the last 4-5 months. Her name has come up a lot in those circles. And not just as a "let's put a woman on the ticket".

They're desperate. There's no other plausible explanation. They must be seeing numbers indicating they're getting a tiny fraction of dispossessed Clinton voters.

She balances the Republican ticket in a way that Biden doesn't balance the Dem ticket.

Yeah, two candidates who believe in evolution is pretty lopsided. Thank goodness she's there to balance that out.
