Cupid might have been the most underrated show anywhere, ever. It was brilliant. Jeremy Piven was marvelous in the title role, the writing was tight, the premise absolutely charming. Not since Moonlighting had there been an hour-long adult romantic comedy series with that sort of rapid-fire dialogue and wit.

A decade later and I'm still bitter about the way ABC mishandled it. First, they tried scheduling it against the most impossible to beat shows of the day, like E.R. Then, when it was obvious it wasn't getting ratings in those time-slots, they played musical time-slots with it and bounced it all over the schedule, so that even the most loyal of its fanbase had a hard time figuring out when it would be on and watching it. Sadly, only 13 episodes of the show aired. The final ep, ironically, aired on Valentine's Day.

Apparently, however, ABC is desperate enough for new series pitches that they're dusting off a show that the first time around, they could not have torpedoed any more effectively had they decided to deliberately sabotage it:

If they keep Rob Thomas actively involved, get an actor with something approaching Jeremy Piven's charm, and don't get all schizophrenic with the scheduling again, it might just stand a chance. However, another good question is whether or not Rob Thomas has the staying power to keep it good. Veronica Mars was insanely brilliant the first season, so-so the second season, and by the end of the third season I was glad to see it end. So while Thomas has an incredible ability to dream up marvelous shows, I don't think he's proven himself able to produce a long running series and maintain any sort of quality.

This thread reminds me of the album reviews in American Psycho. All dead pan empty-souled voice burrowing into my primal brain like white noise on Valium.

I bet right now Ambrya is fisting herself with the disembodied arm of a homeless dude which she affectionately refers to as The Piv Piston.
