We've had an incredibly wet summer. There are TONS of mushrooms growing in my yard and woods. We've looked up a couple of the varities. It seems that at least one of the more abundant types is supposedly both tasty and non-poisonous. Of course, BE WARNED, there is a look-alike species that is very poisonous. We've not taken the chance of eating any.

When I was a kid, one particular type of mushroom grew in the yards of our neighborhood. People came by and, usually getting permission, picked them.

Anyone ever picked and ate their own wild mushrooms, or know anything about them?

The thread title is very misleading.

How so?

I've certainly not limited the discussion to mushrooms harvested strictly for taste.

A couple years ago, or closer to a decade now, I guess, I had these crazy stoner neighbors. It was cool, because I dig the green and all, and they'd always stop by if they got some particularly stoney stuff. I would of course reciprocate.

One night, this long-haired dude knocks on my door at some time past midnight. He's all worked up, bursting with excitement, and he tells me I have to see something.

I go to his place, and they have trash bags full of something on the floor. Everyone looks like they're trembling. He takes one of the bags and dumps it onto the table, and pounds of shrooms tumble out.

But I've done psylocybin, and I know that these shrooms ain't it.

So I waited around till the ambulance arrived, and then I went back to bed.

My husband loves to mushroom hunt. He has a book that describes the different ones with pictures and all. He occasionally brings a few home to cook and eat. I refuse to eat a fungus.

Morel Mushrooms. Very Common, Very Tasty, grow all over the place here.

Beefsteak Mushroom. Look similar to Morels, just bigger, much larger ridges too. My dad loves them, but my mom never let me or my brother eat them, or my father if she knew beforehand, cause she said they were dangerous. One of those "could hurt you, but probably won't" things.

Fungi are disgusting. I refuse to eat anything you could grow between your toes.

(the fact that I am mildly allergic and tend not to feel well when I eat them doesn't help, I suppose, but it does give me a good polite excuse whenever I'm a guest and someone serves them.)

Don't particularly care about mushrooms, but truffles? Gimme both the woodsy and the chocolatey kind. Mmmmm-hmmm. Boy howdy, those are tasty!

I like 'em well enough. I wouldn't pick any and eat them though.

The magic kind have been fun too.

Mushrooms for me are all in how their cooked. If done properly they are delicious. Not done properly and they are vile. I don't eat them much as I don't care for the texture in most cooking methods, and texture is really high on the list of what makes me like food, as my sense of smell is weak. I do love using cream of mushroom soup in stuff though.
