That also ignores that I first offered the bet. But we can see Varrus try to weasel out of it now.

Insurance must not be too profitable.

Nope. I offered you 2-1 on $20. If you're not confident enough in your choice to make an easy $40 then that's fine.

Before you ask, I'm not confident enough to lose $2000 on a silly bet but I'm confident enough to lose $40. Which apparently makes me much more confident than you.

I suspect this is an arbitrage on your part, what with the consensus odds being 8-1 against, you lay off $6 on the odds, floating the other $14. If you win, you win $14, if you lose, you win $8. You sly *******.

Smashed,

So we on at 100 to 1?

Sure thing, ace.

I'd take up 100-1 odds on that.

I'm predicting the odds are closer to 80/87-1, which gives a pretty comfortable margin.

I wouldn't offer them. See, I'd feel compelled to pay out, you seem a reasonable person who would reciprocate in the case of you losing. There's zero chance I'll see $10 from Varrus. Hence, I don't really risk $1000.

There aren't many posters on this board who I'd trust to come up with even short money without escrowing it somehow with a fair broker in advance. You strike me as good for the $10, though, so I'd pay you the $1000. Which would clearly be a silly risk given the actual odds being lower than 100 to 1. Although, clearly 8 to 1 is a terrible price.

ETA: Clearly.

Haha, I don't blame you for not taking 100-1. At those odds I'd even be willing to forgo the escrow and send direct. Forum defamation would be reasonable insurance for the small change.

And yes, 8-1 seems too low by roughly an order of 10. Unless of course Biden an Bayh are diagnosed with cancer after cheating on their spouse with a Gitmo detainee.

Bill Nelson, who I didn't realize is a Senator (which says a lot, that's rare for me) from Florida, apparently, is the current insider rumor.

Seems impossible, but crazier **** has happened.

Advocating the abolishment of the Electoral College is exactly the sort of thing which appeals to lots of voters while safely having a 0% chance of getting through Congress. It's like promoting a federally mandated "Everyone Hug A Kitten Day".

Nothing you've posted would lead me to believe this is the case. I believe you have a net worth of more than $10, I find it exceptionally unlikely I'd receive said funds.

That's why I said "interesting" rather than "good".

In other news, "Everyone Hug A Kitten Day" joined our roster of national holidays last year when it was passed under the radar; paper clipped to a budget request.

So a sure winner, then? Well, unless McCain does something radical like start running ads that for thirty seconds repeat "McCain, apply directly to the white house. McCain, apply directly.."
