I'm so happy the 18 year old 5'3 woman won, and not the barely 16 year old 4'9 little redheaded midget. I was pretty ambivalent about the other Chinese midget, but the thought of seeing that ludicrous faux cupie doll midget face everywhere for months just sickened me.

Turns out that the gold medalist is going to the same college as my younger sister. Add this to the fact that my older sister knew Michael Phelps in college, and I might just petition for a free lifetime supply of Wheaties.

The little 4' tall girl is from (West) Des Moines. I watched it too.

Good for her! I just saw it here in the West Coast, and I must say - it was a great victory. The smaller one laid down a very nice effort to get that silver, but Nastia Liukin was absolutely unbeatable. I think I saw her make a small step twice in the entire competition, and was incredibly graceful.

What gets me, though, is that they seem happy, but they're not overwhelmed, like I would expect. I used to race in Jr. Dragsters, a youth-league version of drag racing. Long story short, I qualified for the west coast championship race four times and participated three. The first time, I jumped the start in the first round out of sheer nerves - I was devastated. Next year, I went back and won my first round pairing, and was so happy I basically burst out into tears before the car had even come to a stop. (For the record, I jumped the second round start, and lost the third year by less than two inches in the third round.) But these people seem so... stonefaced, as compared to my similar experience.

Maybe it's a product of being under such high pressure for so many years... maybe you get used to it? I dunno.

Edit: Then again, maybe I'm just a pansy. =P

I find the bar gymnastics even more impressive. How they manage to do a backwards sommersault on a bar that's 4 inches wide is completely beyond me.

You mean the balance beam? Or the high bar/uneven bars?
#7 Aug 15 2008 at 1:35 AM Rating: Good
Yeah, the balance beam. I actually had to look it up.

I can't think of a better way to get crippled than trying to do sommersaults and backwards flip on a thing like this.

The rest is really impressive too, don't get me wrong, but that bar is just so thin...

Gymnastics is my uni's "other" big sport (besides football.) I think they're something like defending national champs for the fourth year in a row now. All over town during the season, there are billboards of the girls in impossible poses and flips.

I have a feeling some of those girls on the US team are probably starting here this fall, or will next year.

Intresting article on China's domination during these games, and what it means for the US..

My favourite bit, though, was this:

Quote:
Calculated by medals per head of population, Armenia with three (bronze) medals for its 3 million population, leads the field, followed by Georgia, and then Australia (with 16 medals for its 21 million inhabitants). To win this championship, China would have to amass more than 1,000 medals, a tall order even for their system.

I'm am so so tired and sleep now. Have to say that Nastia Liukin was total grace under pressure. The control and precision she showed was just phenomenal and in the world of gymnastics, that will rule over power and flash. Shawn Johnson will definitely be back in 4 years.

Yeah, but she'll be 1/8th as marketable. A 20 year old midget is almost worthless when compared to a 16 year old midget.

The pure floor exercise with no props is the best thing since sliced bread.

It's the reason why I started gymnastics (30 kilos ago Smiley: cry), seeing those people run, twist, turn and jump 3 meters into the air, only to land and spring back up in the other direction had me in awe.

And you're absolutely right Red, Gymnastics (floor, beam, bars, etc) have one of the highest rates in crippling injuries and death, especially for girls.

It's one of the few sports where a minor error could cause huge damage, and thus requires you to be at your best 100% of the time (extreme sports excluded, people throwing themselves off a mountain with nothing but a pair of skis on strikes me as madness more than sport, but you gotta let the adrenaline junkies have their fix somehow).

Oh, I don't know. This looks like it would be somewhat dangerous sport to me, and it's at least as popular as gymnastics, though on a smaller scale usually.

Gymnastics are rigged like professional boxing is. You can watch a match and leave scratching your head wondering what the judges were thinking. As I watched the chinese stumble across the floor and get 9.0's or above I couldn't help make the comparison.

So to sum up, it was rigged for the judges to cheat for the Chinese, but not cheat enough to change the rankings. Gotcha.

As long as she still looks 16 though, all the men will still drool.

Is Aadyn a girls name or are you a man?

Oh I am more then aware he can defend himself. You asked what he was talking about, I answered.

As to my gender, not that it is any of your business, but I am male.

What kind of name is "Boomsticker"? Trying to compensate for something?

I didn't ask you.

You didn't have to. I took it upon myself to answer because you didnt seem to understand so I dumbed it down, as a favor to you. No need to thank me. Consider it my good deed of the day.
