At first I wasn't really worried, but now it would seem that the US has taken a strong stance in favor of Georgia and is demanding Russia cease all military action against them. Everything is happening so fast.

What exactly is happening over there? Do you think we might be going to war with Russia over this?

Georgia won, and the Russians are pised off.

What happened was, the French brokered a truce and then George jumped in behind him all, "YEAH! YEAH! TAKE THAT!"

Not a chance in hell. Which is a good part of the problem.

We'll end up sending in a bunch of military aid workers and stationing them around Georgia, not to shoot at russians so much, but more to make Russia worried about accidentally bombing US troops. Then strongly worded letters will be sent, likely resulting in the brekaway azkhaban (sp?) region and whatever area Russia took being declared protector states of russia or something stupid like that.

Invading Russia with an overstretched military - it worked for Hitler.

This thread is about the Beach Volleyball match between Russia and Georgia Smiley: mad

If you want to discuss the whole "war breaking out and people dying from genocide" ****, do it in the proper thread !

So, to get back on topic, why do female beach volleyball players wear tiny bikins? Couldn't they have normal sporting gear, like regular volleyball players? And are male beach volleyball players forced to wear Speedos? Seems only fair.

And what's so special about volleyball that it gets turned into a "beach" sport with tiny bikins? Couldn't we do that with every sport? Beach archery in bikini? Beach golf in bikini? Beach judo? Beach 110m hurdles?

Also, wouldn't it be more fair if Phelps entered the Olympics as his own country?

Yeah, and Russia was just shocked that the US waved it's arms and will do nothing. Absolutely shocked, I tell you.

I know! They were down 17-6 and then BAM! Ace! Ace again! Whoosh! Did you see that?! Diving return of serve! I hadn't seen one of those since the great Chad Vs Paraguay match of 1967.

So after that, the Russians were all like "Well fck this ****, I'm going home to kill me some Georgians", and by God they did.

Reminds me of my friend's comment when I told him Russia had invaded Georgia.

"Did they use Sherman tanks?"

For some reason, I pictured you saying this like Steve Martin of "2 wild and crazy guys"

It was pretty funny, I choked on my orange juice.

Georgia's president worries me. Not that Russia doesn't but this fellow was warned by the US not to provoke Russia, he did so -- which is completely in his rights and I don't mean that he has to do whatever the US says -- but then he's overstating the extent of US military aid:
New York Times wrote:
Mr. Saakashvili’s latest show of bravado came only a day after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that she and a special State Department envoy had explicitly and repeatedly warned him not to take any military action against Georgian separatists that might provoke Russia, cautioning that the United States was not prepared to back him militarily if he did. He also appeared to exaggerate the Pentagon’s planned relief operation, making it seem larger and further developed than it was.

“We already saw U.S. Air Force landing in Georgia despite Russians controlling the airspace,” he said, after a C-17 had touched down. “And we will see U.S. military ships entering Georgian ports despite Russians blocking it. That we will see.” He added, “These will be serious military ships.”

But the American military said that although the Navy had been ordered to assist in the humanitarian mission, it had not yet formed its plans and no ships were en route.

Wouldn't you if there was even a tiny chance it slowed the Russians for a while?

Maybe, but I'm not him, I'm me. And I live in the country who he's volunteering military aid from.

There's not much else he can do. The threat of US intervention is basically his last card.

Eventhough it's a 2 of clubs.

But on beating other southern states in terms of everything from size to per capita income to beating Hawaii in the Sugar bowl . . .

Us State of Georgians aren't too worried about Russia invading us, unless they for some reason think we're allied with the Country of Georgia just because we share the same name. Cuz we're not really. I'd say 90% of citizens here couldn't even point out the Country of Georgia on a map, and probably half of them think that it must share a border with Iraq.

All glory to the Motherland!
The liberals at the NYT wrote:
The United States and Poland reached a long-stalled deal on Thursday to place an American missile defense base on Polish territory, in the strongest reaction so far to Russia’s military operation in Georgia.

Russia reacted angrily, saying that the move would worsen relations with the United States that have already been strained severely in the week since Russian troops entered separatist enclaves in Georgia, a close American ally. At a news conference on Friday, a senior Russian defense official, Colonel General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, suggested that Poland was making itself a target by agreeing to serve as host for the anti-missile system. Such an action “cannot go unpunished,” he said.

The deal reflected growing alarm in a range of countries that had been part of the Soviet sphere, about a newly rich and powerful Russia’s intentions in its former cold war sphere of power. In fact, negotiations dragged on for 18 months — but were completed only as old memories and new fears surfaced in recent days.

Those fears were codified to some degree in what Polish and American officials characterized as unusual aspects of the final deal: that at least temporarily American soldiers would staff air defense sites in Poland oriented toward Russia, and that the United States would be obliged to defend Poland in case of an attack with greater speed than required under NATO, of which Poland is a member.

I suppose the good news is that we'll have a couple days warning while the Russians roll over Ukraine.

I wish Putin would give a news conference where, if asked about potential US intervention, he just laughs for 45 minutes, and judo throws the reporter.

Perhaps he is trying to rid his country of the old Russian loyalists? By prevoking an invasion, and perhaps a war, he solidifies the freedom of his country.

America will now make its choice as to how commited to freedom it is. The left will say no and the reps will throw down for its allies. Business as usual in America.

I fully expect the lefty's of America to fight for Russia and the right to fight for freedom.

When I first heard about all of this hullabaloo, I was thinking "what the hell, Russia is trying to pick a fight with just ONE of our states, and not the entire US?"

Never realized that there was actually an entire other territory called Georgia.

I can't be the only one, right?
