Current and Former Republicans Line Up for Obama
by FOXNews.com
Tuesday, August 12, 2008

Barack Obama’s campaign is rolling out a number of centrist Republicans who are endorsing the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee over Republican rival John McCain — in a show of his ability to win cross-over votes.

A conference call Tuesday featured former Iowa Rep. Jim Leach, former White House intelligence adviser Rita Hauser and former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who represented his state as a Republican, but switched to become a Democrat so he could vote for Obama in the primary.

“I’m convinced that the national interest demands a new approach to our interaction with the world,” said Leach, adding that Obama offers the leadership to do that.

Leach lost his bid for another term in office in 2006. He was a foreign service officer before being elected to Congress and served as head of both the International Relations and Banking committees.

Leach predicted that a lot of Republicans and independents are going to be attracted by Obama’s campaign.

Its bad when White House insiders are coming out for the opposition party.

They're looking for jobs. Obviously they're going to support the winner. This election is so far from close I laugh out loud at the media narrative.

He's also as likely to win as Fred.

Do you realize how biased and ignorant you sound? Regardless of whether you like Barack Obama or not, it is amazingly dumb to believe that Obama has a miniscule chance to be the next President.

And believe it or not Obama's 20yr association with that blatantly racist Wright isn't doing him any favors.

Who? Oh, yeah, right. I forgot it was still April.

I was right about slick willy being elected both times. Right about W being elected both times. For you publicly educated brats that's 16yrs of being right.

I think you're being incredibly naive to think that when it comes down to it the american people are going to elect a black guy with a muslim sounding name.

I think you're not giving the American people enough credit. First of all...when it comes down to it, the top two Democratic candidates were a black guy with a muslim sounding name and a woman.

If America looked past the black skin and the muslim name then, why wouldn't they in november? It's not like he just came out of nowhere and they just put him on the ballot for fun. He obviously has huge support. Polls don't mean all that much, but he does lead McCain on averge, so it's pretty ludicrous to believe that he doesn't even have a chance. If he truly didn't even have a chance of coming close, then he'd be way behind in polls.

Btw, predicting ClintonX2-BushX2 doesn't mean you're absolutely right about this one. 1996 and 2004 were pretty much gimmies; 1992 as well. And we all know how funky that 2000 election was.

Actually he did just come out of nowhere. Look at how much time he's actually spent in congress. He's an invention of the DNC because they were sick of the Clintons running the party. And now with what's come out about Edwards it makes me wonder if he would have won the nomination at all had the media reported the story back when they first heard about it. Obama is nothing more than a puppet.

Wow..paranoid much? It's the liberal media!! They hid the story...are you serious? You don't think Fox News wouldn't have loved to report this? Hell, the liberal media would have reported it too. Regardless of what you may think, ratings are more important to them than politics...period.

And I guess George Bush's 6 years as governor really prepared him well for the standup job he's done as President. Or maybe it was the coked up college years that did it; you tell me.

In a year when Dems are polling consistently 15-20 points ahead of Republicans on brand alone, Obama can't manage to garner more then a few point lead over McCain? He's running on popularity. His entire campaign depends on having such a massively popular appeal that the people wont stop and think about issues and positions until after they've voted.

McCain? He does hold the record for missing the most votes. Probably a new 20 year old blond waitress at Denny's during the Earlybird special.

You got me again! Damn, why don't I see that coming??

Historically, people tend to poll based on popular appeal and perception early on and then close in and vote on issues and realistic expectations in the election. Obama really needs to have a 12+ polling lead right now so he can ride that wave into the voting booth. He's nowhere close to where he needs to be given the type of candidate he is.

Totally. That's why he lost to Clinton again and again, when he was way behind in polling. Oh wait, I see now, your point is that he's so good at closing polling gaps late that he should really TRY and be behind now? Is that it?

This election is 70/30 Obama, right now, using the quaint "Electoral College" system we've come to rely on to elect Presidents. If that changes, and it's somewhere in the range of 55/45 at some point before November, I'll let you know. What you're looking at now is a massive favorite, with a massive money advantage, who has turned out more voters in the primaries than any candidate in history.

Also, let's be honest for a minute, he really doesn't have to be very good, does he? I mean, he is, but it hardly matters. He's running against a corpse in a suit after 8 years of GOP rule ending, AS ALWAYS in economic disaster.

He's won. There is no issue McCain can appeal to. Your absolute BEST hope is that people won't vote for the Negro. God knows you wrote him off as a candidate as soon as you saw the color of his skin.

Thanks for the laughs, again, though.

I'd say the better question is why, in an election where McCain has branded himself the "maverick" and needs overwhelming independent support, he hasn't led over Obama once in polling averages since early May (which was actually a tie but I'll give it to him)? And has actually been, on average, 4-5 points behind.

As I pointed out before, this isn't like the Bush/Kerry summer race where people's opinions were flying back and forth and the polling graphs looked like poorly drawn modern art. This cycle, people settled early on into a solid Obama lead which McCain has failed to chip into despite anything he's tried. And his recent barrage of negative ads (which hasn't proved very effective -- Obama is still 5pts ahead) was McCain unloading the rest of his primary cash before he's constrained to the federal funding limits. If he didn't get some significant traction from that, what will do it for him?

I already talked about it more at length in another thread but Obama is holding the Kerry states and making inroads into Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico and other 2004 Bush states. Rather than gloat over why Obama isn't ahead by 15, I'd be worrying why Virginia is tied, Indiana is tied, North Carolina is only McCain's by a few points and Montana & the Dakotas are suddenly in play. McCain can't afford to lose a single state and yet he's forced to not only run a clean sweep of the "in play" states but has to take back some of the ones currently in the Obama camp.
