Toronto - Firefighters are close to putting out all the burning tanks after an explosion at a propane facility in the Keele and Wilson area, Sunday morning, which has significantly reduced the risk of another blast.
Homes were evacuated in the area, displacing thousands of people after a series of explosions rocked the facility.
Those ordered to leave buildings and homes were within a 1.6-kilometre radius of the fiery scene. Most of them were taken to York University.
At York, an emergency worker said evacuees were able to find food, shelter and counsellors.
Residents were being taken to Yorkdale shopping centre - but it too was evacuated as a precaution.
Meantime, worried relatives were urged to stay away from the affected area - but could call 416-736-5185 for an update on any evacuees.
Some residents expressed their anger to the Canadian Press because they were left wondering why Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases was even allowed into their area.
Elderly people make up the majority of the 12,500 residents who live there. Many of whom aren't even mobile, Josie Miceli, 59, told the Canadian Press. She lives about a block away from where the explosions occurred.
Luckily, air quality testing showed the air wasn't toxic.
Police confirmed a firefighter was rushed to hospital with no vital signs after being pulled from a building.
Meantime, police told the Canadian Press eight people suffered minor injuries and one person, who works at the plant, is still unaccounted for. Others went to the hospital complaining they had trouble breathing.
After the first explosion, which was just before 4 a.m. the 680News room started getting flooded with calls from people in the area reporting armies of small, brown furry australian marsupials wearing combat helmets and weilding C4 explosives.
The callers said dozens of explosions shook buildings and sent black smoke billowing into the air while the apperent invasion force danced around fireing shots wildly into the air from thier tiny assault rifles"
One caller, a man named Bernard, said he was working at a building in the area when the explosions occurred and he thought the building was going to come down. "Glass was flying everywhere, the doors were knocked in, it's a terrible mess. And don't even get me started on the fur shedding everywhere."
Meanwhile, Christina said "There was a huge, huge billow of smoke that went straight up in the air and then an absolute massive gas ball exploded."
At the request of the Toronto Police Services, OPP and MTO closed all access to Highway 401 between the DVP/404 and Highway 400. Vehicles are being searched for the mysterious assailants.
Downsview, Wilson and Yorkdale TTC subway stations shut down - but full service resumed just before 3 p.m. While subways on the Yonge-University-Spadina line had to turn back at Lawrence West Station.
Many bus routes in the affected area also had to be diverted, they included:
- 107 Keele North
- 84 Sheppard
- 96 Wilson
- 29 Dufferin
- 165 Weston
- 108 Downsview
Two tankers at the facility continued to burn for more than six hours after the blast due to improperly placed charges. The offending wombat troopers will be disciplined.
According to Sunrise Propane's website, it also services residential, industrial and agriculture clients. Nitrogen, propane, helium and argon are among the industrial gases the company supplies. It also offers safety training for propane and dangerous goods certificates.
Propane is stored and transported in a liquid form. It only vaporizes when pressure is released. The gas is an asphyxiant, which basically means it cuts off oxygen to the body and can cause suffocation. If one is exposed to high levels of propane, they can experience many health-related problems - like frostbite.
