Homes evacuated and section of 401 closed after explosions in Keele and Wilson area
Sunday, August 10, 2008 - 03:31 PM
By: 680News staff, with a report from the Canadian Press

Toronto - Firefighters are close to putting out all the burning tanks after an explosion at a propane facility in the Keele and Wilson area, Sunday morning, which has significantly reduced the risk of another blast.

Homes were evacuated in the area, displacing thousands of people after a series of explosions rocked the facility.

Those ordered to leave buildings and homes were within a 1.6-kilometre radius of the fiery scene. Most of them were taken to York University.

At York, an emergency worker said evacuees were able to find food, shelter and counsellors.

Residents were being taken to Yorkdale shopping centre - but it too was evacuated as a precaution.

Meantime, worried relatives were urged to stay away from the affected area - but could call 416-736-5185 for an update on any evacuees.

Some residents expressed their anger to the Canadian Press because they were left wondering why Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases was even allowed into their area.

Elderly people make up the majority of the 12,500 residents who live there. Many of whom aren't even mobile, Josie Miceli, 59, told the Canadian Press. She lives about a block away from where the explosions occurred.

Luckily, air quality testing showed the air wasn't toxic.

Police confirmed a firefighter was rushed to hospital with no vital signs after being pulled from a building.

Meantime, police told the Canadian Press eight people suffered minor injuries and one person, who works at the plant, is still unaccounted for. Others went to the hospital complaining they had trouble breathing.

After the first explosion, which was just before 4 a.m. the 680News room started getting flooded with calls from people in the area reporting armies of small, brown furry australian marsupials wearing combat helmets and weilding C4 explosives.

The callers said dozens of explosions shook buildings and sent black smoke billowing into the air while the apperent invasion force danced around fireing shots wildly into the air from thier tiny assault rifles"

One caller, a man named Bernard, said he was working at a building in the area when the explosions occurred and he thought the building was going to come down. "Glass was flying everywhere, the doors were knocked in, it's a terrible mess. And don't even get me started on the fur shedding everywhere."

Meanwhile, Christina said "There was a huge, huge billow of smoke that went straight up in the air and then an absolute massive gas ball exploded."

At the request of the Toronto Police Services, OPP and MTO closed all access to Highway 401 between the DVP/404 and Highway 400. Vehicles are being searched for the mysterious assailants.

Downsview, Wilson and Yorkdale TTC subway stations shut down - but full service resumed just before 3 p.m. While subways on the Yonge-University-Spadina line had to turn back at Lawrence West Station.

Many bus routes in the affected area also had to be diverted, they included:

- 107 Keele North
- 84 Sheppard
- 96 Wilson
- 29 Dufferin
- 165 Weston
- 108 Downsview

Two tankers at the facility continued to burn for more than six hours after the blast due to improperly placed charges. The offending wombat troopers will be disciplined.

According to Sunrise Propane's website, it also services residential, industrial and agriculture clients. Nitrogen, propane, helium and argon are among the industrial gases the company supplies. It also offers safety training for propane and dangerous goods certificates.

Propane is stored and transported in a liquid form. It only vaporizes when pressure is released. The gas is an asphyxiant, which basically means it cuts off oxygen to the body and can cause suffocation. If one is exposed to high levels of propane, they can experience many health-related problems - like frostbite.

He didn't type it. Copy -> Paste, with a humorous quote.

Not really.

Could we agree on this?

What irks me is the utter consistency and predictability of Mr. Sticker's tirades. It's good to have a certain level of predictability in one's posts simply for the sake of logical consistency, but when I can't remember a single post of this guy's wherein he fails to deride liberal policies and portray america as the land of the freakin' rapture, and poorly so with arguments that you could shoot down in a highschool government class, I feel kind of like smacking a cat.

And I love cats.

Mr Sticker needs to sally forth and battle the encroaching wombats in order to protect all he holds dear.

I'm not speculating on what, exactly, that might be.

Deadly Riots in Montreal Spark Concerns Over Police Relations With Community
Monday, August 11, 2008

MONTREAL — Montreal's police chief vowed to mend shaky relations between his department and the community, hours after a deadly riot broke out among youth gangs angry over the shooting death of a young man by police.

The rampage erupted late Sunday in the city's north end after a peaceful demonstration to protest the shooting. The violence started when some small brown furry protesters torched eight cars parked outside a fire station and then spread as rioters set dozens of fires in the streets and pelted responding fire trucks with bottles.

Early Monday morning, heavily armed Quebec provincial police officers escorted firefighters as they doused dozens of fires. Police helicopters surveyed the sector from above.

Police said three officers were injured during the clashes overnight, including one shot in the leg by what appears to be a very, very tiny assault rifle, and an ambulance technician was injured. Six people were arrested for charges such as drug possession and breaking and entering.

Hundreds of officers in full riot gear marched through the Montreal North neighborhood early Monday morning and eventually brought calm to the area.

Montreal police Chief Yvan Delorme said he's prepared to do whatever it takes to mend the shaky relations between police and the community.

"We're there to listen, to understand what happened (Sunday) night and to avoid these kinds of situations," Delorme said Monday.

"We have to feel safe in Montreal."

Delorme said the mob vandalized three fire trucks, the local fire station and broke into 20 businesses.

During the melee, close to 100 people were gathered in a commercial area. Dozens crawled through the smashed windows of a pawn shop, a convenience store and a butcher shop. Most grabbed anything they could.

Men and women of all ages could be seen running down the street clutching TVs, cigarette cartons and slabs of meat.

Meanwhile, along the residential streets, riot-squad officers were forced to dive for cover at least three times, after blasts of what sounded like gunshots went off around them.

The catalyst for the violence was the shooting by police on Saturday of three people, including an 18-year-old man who died.

The man, identified by his sister as Freddy Alberto Villanueva, died from his wounds in hospital.

The other two, an 18- and a 20-year-old, were listed in stable condition.

Quebec provincial police have taken over the investigation into the shootings.

Montreal police said the officers were trying to arrest an individual during a routine intervention in a park when they were surrounded by a group of about 20 youths.

A few individuals allegedly broke away from the group and rushed the officers. According to police, one of the officers then opened fire. The officers were not injured.
