Nice pipes.

See? Something good came from this. I probably wouldn't have heard of her otherwise.

Edit: I've got this solved: Miss Melua and Regina Spektor, three rounds bare knuckle boxing.

Agreed.

Venue?

Tough call, but Checkpoint Charlie would add drama.

Ms Melua singing

'Closest thing to crazy' seems to fit the bill.

Ugh.

The backing strings and vocal styling remind me of an Andrew Lloyd Weber song.

And the wood block percussion is so cheesy 80's high school dance song.

Ya got me.

Only songs of his I know are the ones they played on the trailer for the 2004 version Phantom of the Opera...played over the Blockbuster Video sound system every 10 minutes back then.

And the song that was a parody of his style they performed in Spamalot.

Back on track, one obvious question here is "Has NATO gotten too large?" As my crudely colored map here shows (which makes me want to play Medieval: Total War), the alliance has grown considerably since its inception:

I suppose the good news is that much of Europe is allied with us and those remaining are more neutral towards us than antipathetic. But I wonder if our resolve is the same across the board and an alliance is only as strong as the willingness of its participants to hold up their end of the bargin. If Russia attacks, will we be willing to respond with military force? For the UK? Sure. France, Spain, Italy, Germany? No doubt. Poland? The Czech Republic? Erm... maybe. Lithuania? Slovakia? Estonia? Are we willing to risk a prolonged war with a nuclear opponent over who gets some chunk of Ukraine? Would we reinstitute a draft to protect the sovereignty of Bulgaria? If we are, great.

If not, we need to start carefully considering how NATO expands. The first time NATO responds to an attack upon a member state with a "Umm... stop doing that? Please?", the whole thing is going to fall apart. I don't know if there's anyone here who'd be willing to open a new war in Georgia over South Ossetia. If we're not, expansion might not be the best choice.

I agree with Joph. Unless we actually get Russia itself in NATO, it's going to become a huge game of double-bluff between them and us.

For European countries, the obvious and only real solution is to create a European army. There's just no way around it. This can be done either in parallel with NATO, or instead of it. If it's instead, we can replace NATO with some other military treaty between the US and the EU. I don't think it should be the US's responsibility to intervene if Estonia gets attacked. It should be the EU. Russia is still a bit of a paper tiger militarily. This gives us time to create a viable army. If we don't, we're leaving ourselves open to blackmail and threats from Russia, and the more time goes by, the bigger the risk is.

The recent relationship between the West and Russia is one of missed opportunities. We had 15 years to turn them into solid allies when they were really weakened, and we didn't do it. It's a big shame. Today, we have the time to create a EU army. We have to take it too, because we might not have the luxury of time later on. If attacking Estonia meant attacking a united EU army, you can bet that Russia would think twice about it. They wouldn't be able to threaten or blackmail small EU countries while being friendly with others. We need a united front, otherwise there's no point in having a EU.

None of this solves the situation in the Caucasus, but it should at least take care of Europe.

Agree with all of Joph & Red's last post, except for the EU Army. Srsly - imperial bayonets on Metric rifles? Smiley: dubious (i keed)

Anywho - Update:

Russia 'ends Georgia operation'

Quote:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an end to military operations against Georgia, the Kremlin says.

He told officials he had taken the decision to end the operation after restoring security for civilians and peacekeepers in South Ossetia.

Hehe. The only decision Medvedev has taken is to do what Putin told him to do.

Still, if it really is the end of military action, it's a great development. It could've easily been a lot worse.

Probably convinced Putin he'd do something else to drive the price of Oil higher since this wasn't working out. Sell technology to Iran, perhaps.
