We can play semantic legal games with the word "separation", but it's reasonable to assume that they were not a happy married couple long before he met Cindy.
They were until he started @#%^ing someone his daughter's age.
No. They weren't. Just reading the linked article McCain told several of his friends that Carol wasn't the same woman he married immediately after returning from Vietnam. Now. We can assume he was shallow and couldn't handle her physical injuries, or perhaps that she'd (or both of them) changed in personality over the 6 years he hadn't seen eachother. You have to remember that they were married for less than a year and a half before he became a POW, during which time he was in active military service. When he returned, they'd spent over 80% of their entire married lives with no communication at all. It's not surprising that they'd have become different people by then, doubly so given that both suffered some pretty serious traumas along the way.
In any case it's clear that he didn't feel the same things for her after returning from the war as he did before leaving.

This isn't in dispute, ace. I have no idea what you're on about. His wife's not a vindictive ***** out to ruin the guy's political career? Oh no, all the more reason cheat on her with a wealthy drug addict your daughter's age. Nothing says "cheat on the *****!" like loyalty.
Lol. Or they'd both realized they'd become different people, but maintained their marriage out of convenience both politically and for their kids, but when McCain met someone they agreed to a divorce.
I just find it hard to believe that it was really that much of a surprise to Carol...
