I'm a huge fan of heist movies, so any well thought out/planned/well executed scenario like this is fascinating to me.

Forum=4 = my personal message board for a sec:

There's a movie we should watch about a group of people in Toronto who plan bank robberies for fun, then naturally, get boxed into having to do one for reals!

In!

Curiouser and curiouser

Quote:
William Quigley, one of Mr Rockefeller’s closest friends told the New York Daily News, that he was distraught at losing custody of his daughter and would have spent months planning the abduction.

“He was pushed to the edge,” Mr Quigley said. “He said, ‘I don’t know what to I’m going to do. I may have to kidnap her. I love her so much’.”

Detectives described Mr Rockefeller as a “ghost” and who appears to have laid a false trail of clues as he planned the abduction of his daughter. Police have admitted that they can find no trace of his existence before the early 1990s.

His bank records show a recent withdrawal of a large amount of cash to buy gold coins, which would be impossible to trace and easy to convert back into cash abroad.

Mr Rockefeller had suggested to friends that he was working for the Pentagon, either as a mathematician or physicist. He met Ms Boss, a graduate of Stanford and Harvard Business School, in the early 1990s when she worked on Wall Street for Merrill Lynch.

The New York Post yesterday claimed that Mr Rockefeller had initially fallen in love with Ms Boss’s twin sister, Julia, who married Charles Knapp, a publisher, in April 1994.

One friend said: “Clark was desperately in love with Julia. There was plenty of people who were under the impression that he was dating Sandra only because she was Julia’s sister”.

They couple are believed to have married in 1995, but a certificate can not be traced. After Reigh’s birth Mr Rockefeller was her main carer while his wife worked. As well as her financial career, she was also an aide to Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York.

So... there's no record of his existence before he met his ex?

That's freakish. And people say it's paranoid to do background checks, holy ****.

Yeah, one news story certainly makes it less paranoid.

Oh, maybe.

Anecdotally I knew a couple a few years ago where something a little like this happened, only there was no child involved. The husband literally left the house saying he was going to the corner store and never came back.

I always wondered if he'd had a fugue episode or some such, but people like that are usually picked up rather quickly, I'd imagine.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled loving father who doesn't exist on paper.

Well...he turned himself in...in Maryland, evidently, to the FBI...so that's good at least.

From what the local news reported, an real estate agent called in the tip. The FBI found his boat dock in the Inner Harbor and then had him called with report that the boat was taking on water. He was arrested leaving the carriage house he had rented in Mt Vernon.

Marina manager in Baltimore Sun quoted in Baltimore Sun story today

Quote:

Early Saturday, FBI agents served a search-and-seizure warrant at the Anchorage Marina in Canton, according to the manager of the marina. The agents initially wanted to find a 72-foot catamaran called Serenity, said Jim Ruscoe Jr., the manager of the marina.

The FBI agents told marina staff they were after a man named Charles "Chip" Smith, apparently one of the many aliases used by Rockefeller. The marina's guest log shows a Chip Smith signing in May 24, according to records reviewed by The Sun.

But records at the marina showed that Smith owns a far more modest vessel: a 35-foot catamaran with frayed lines and a discolored hull.

"They wanted to draw him out and get him here," Ruscoe said. So the marina manager hatched a plan with the FBI.

Ruscoe called Rockefeller around 1:30 p.m. saying that the boat was sinking at the dock.

"He said, 'I was here a week ago and it seemed OK to me.'"

"I said, 'Well, there have been storms in the past week that have been rocking though the marina and it is talking on water.' "

Rockefeller said he would "send someone" to take care of it. "I said, 'Really, whoever you send be sure you check in with me so I can explain what we've done,'" Ruscoe said.

Ruscoe put pumps around the boat so if Rockefeller made it to the marina the ruse would appear real. But FBI agents picked him up outside his house.

Ruscoe described the boat as "chain saw food" and estimated its worth at $5,000.

And not too surprisingly it seems his prints are on file in connection with an unsolved murder.

On the other hand, the lead sentence in that article makes me laugh. It sounds like the 7-year-old is wanted for questioning.

Quote:
The mystery dad accused of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter in Boston, who may be linked to an unsolved killing in California, was returned to Massachusetts Tuesday to face charges.
