Mark 1:21-28
In those verses Jesus tells an evil spirit to leave a man and it does. People are amazed and news spreads about Jesus.

Regardless if you somehow twist this verse out of context into an instruction to fight evil, that doesn't lead in any way to fighting a person. What this verse would seem to indicate to me is that you can evict evil spirits from people. Notice Jesus doesn't gun down the possessed man first.

His mistake is in supposing that religion is the only existential reason for being ethical.

Enlightened self interest is a good one.

That quote of your presupposes an ethical system, and then essentially tries to equate an ethical system that is different with the theistic ethical system we've developed out of our Christian background, to the lack of any ethical system at all, which really isn't valid.

Ethics needs some backing ideas, but these ideas do not have to come from religion. They could come from nature I suppose, although it would end up looking a lot different. Ethics aren't inherent absolute truths, they are derived from the decision that people take on what they consider right or wrong.

* ethical motive: motivation based on ideas of right and wrong
* the philosophical study of moral values and rules

No, no, threat of eternal burning is clearly a much more noble reason for ethical behavior.

Xsarus,

Jesus fought evil where he found it.

Quote:
Luke 22:36, which says: " Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it,and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one".

37It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'[b]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment."

Also a few verses later he tells the disciples not to use their swords.

Out of context verses are out of context. And I'd reiterate that people aren't evil.

Just because Jesus himself fought against evil doesn't mean that we're all supposed to. The whole point is leave the judgment to GOD. That is what Jesus taught. And he was God, so he could judge.

Matthew wrote:
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,..."

It's not the Koran. Jesus didn't have to lead a nation. He did not have to be practical. Once you start hating people, you've moved to the persecutor role, and thus the christian prays for you.

So you only pray for people you like? How benevolent.
You really are stupid, aren't you?

Rhetorical btw.
