Looks like he finally lost it.

Chief: Church gunman says he acted out of 'hatred for the liberal movement'

Police say a man opened fire at a Knoxville, Tenn., church yesterday because he couldn't find a job and "his stated hatred for the liberal movement."

No better way to take out a bunch of liberals than to shoot up a church in Tennessee.

To be fair, I believe it was a unitarian church.

Reminds me of a line I heard somewhere about people who are suffering economically "clinging to guns."

Wow, I actually agreed with something Knox said. The Apocalypse is upon us.

There are fundamentalist Christans out there that are content to rant and rave about the liberals without going and shooting people (my in laws are among them.) I ascribe the the perception that Jesus was himself a freakin' socialist, so I don't know what all the fuss is about.

Anyone who violently attacks someone for their beliefs has already lost.

Unless they have brown skin, obviously. I know you assumed it was implied, I'm just clarifying for the others.

You're the one filled with hate.

For ignorance, it's true.

Unlike the news papers and tv broadcasts that first reported this story I decided to check out the Unitarian website. These people were not Christians.

They're no different than any other cult. This doesn't justify what Atkinson did but to call this guy a christian is nothing more than an attack on a religion people don't like. Not only that but the guy was a member of the 'church' along with his ex-wife. Could it be that what this 'church' was teaching drove him to this?

You do realize that the only reason that you believe in your particular flavor of Jesus-magic is because your parents believed in that same Jesus-magic?

What other basis do you have for casting off other magic as crazy while maintaining that your magic is perfectly fine and normal?

Of course you weren't, and you never have.

Okay, so you've declared them a cult because they combine aspects of Christianity, Judaism and some fairly muddleheaded version of Buddhism.

None of which makes them a cult. What is your basis for saying so, other than "OMG tehy r not krischuns!!1!1!!1"?

Samy,

Did you even check their website?

I did, which is how I knew what their rather eclectic beliefs are.

Linked as "Religious Education", you numbskull.

Quote:
We need to understand our connection with our liberal religious heritage: the Jewish and Christian roots from which we spring; the Eastern religious traditions that have nurtured us; the insights of philosophy and science that have expanded our knowledge; and our mystical sense of union with one another, our planet, and the universe.

Not that hard to find.

Now, why do you say they're a cult?

David Koresh was a strong charismatic leader who demanded complete obedience from his followers. That is one of the hallmarks of a cult.

I see nothing like that in this group. Quite the opposite, if they're telling people to think for themselves.

Actually, that is pretty radical nowadays. To not tell others exactly what they should believe, is far from the norm. I could see how a groundhog like Varrus would think they were a cult, based on that.

I think they are being encouraged to think for themselves. Whether they actually do it or not is up to them.

I'm not sure why you think this is a cult yet.
