I think I am. I can't stand Schmaltz.

I was wondering when this guy would die. He was given six months to live about a year ago, so he twice exceeded his lifespan. Good for him.

I had a cousin die of pancreatic cancer recently. It's a bad way to go.

I admire anyone who can keep his spirits up through that.

On the other hand, he's better off, Smash is better off, it's win/win.

Patrick Swayze has pancreatic cancer, correct? He should do a last dance instead of a last lecture.

Dateline had a piece on him last night, pretty sad for his family but it was pretty amazing how he was taking it, even when they interviewed him a couple of months after the Dr's expectations.

I'm sad. I saw his last lecture a few months ago and it was awesome.

The world needs more fun professors like him.

Hell, if even HALF my uni professors were that excited about the subjects they were teaching, I'd have learned a lot more in school. As it is, I can name one professor I had that was that outstanding (thanks Dr. Palevitz!)

Dying of pancreatic cancer? The guy strikes me as a self aggrandizing prick, to be honest. I'm glad he's dead now for sure.

If I were dying of pancreatic cancer, I'd probably be self-aggrandizing too. People do ego-stroking bs all the time with much less of an impetus.

Well at least now we know that he was, indeed, suffering from a terminal illness, unlike Moe who last-lectured simply for fun.

Sure, there's just less social pressure to applaud them because they decide to tell people to fear nothing and take risks when they have 5 months to live.

Oh boy, live every day like it's your last, powerful stuff, dead guy!

I've listened to his last lecture. Several things bother me. One is that he says the secret to his success is easy: call him at 10pm any Friday night in his office and he'll tell you. Fine, fine anyone can advocate workaholism - nothing too shocking there. But he begins the talk saying the most important part of life is his wife and family. And he had young children. I'd guess they are between about 2 and 7 years old now. He probably started having kids at age 40. So he had plenty of time before they were born and likely was promoted to full professor. And maybe he did throttle back on work when they were born - but that isn't what he said. His "roadblocks are to stop other people who don't want it enough" philosophy doesn't account for death. That one is for us all.

Fundamentally flawed message in any case. If we all behaved as if death was not some eventual promise, but clear and imminent then much of what we do would be purposeless.
