Labour lost their 25th safest seat (out of 600 odd) to the Scottish National Party today. The SNP plan a referendum on Scottish independance in the next few years and are already in power in Scotland.

Labour MP calls for Brown to quit after by-election humiliation

The Cabinet must tell Gordon Brown it’s time to quit, a Labour MP said today, beginning what is expected to become a clamour for his resignation.

Graham Stringer said that it was time for a “new start” in the wake of the loss of Labour’s 25th safest seat, Glasgow East, in yesterday’s by-election.

[...]

Labour had hoped that their appalling run of electoral losses would end in one of Scotland’s greatest Labour strongholds. The SNP’s John Mason, however, ended the party's 84-year grip on the constituency, declaring the victory as "not just a political earthquake, it is off the Richter scale”.

Labour Cabinet Minister’s were forced to accept the severity of the defeat.

Des Browne, Secretary of State for Defence and Scotland, claimed that Margaret Curran, the popular Labour candidate, had run a good campaign but could not fight off the national hostility to the Government.

Most of the newspapers are saying it's not so much a vote for independance as a protest against Brown (from the article, it's common for small parties to win by-elections and then lose them again come the general election, which has more effect on who runs the country). It's still very bad news for labour. I wonder how Brown will react?

By finding a way to avoid a leadership election within the Labour party. As sad it is, our next government will be Tory.

Having said that, I'm pro-Scottish independence if the Scots want it. No reason not to. They already got their own football team, what more do you need these days?

That's exactly why I'm pro-independent for London.

And that's only up to zone 2!

It's not so much meaningless ******** as a lack of.. ANYTHING. The public (more accurately, the newspapers and press) want showmanship and instant gratification. Brown hasn't given them anything. He's introduced a couple of really bad policies (scrapping the 10p starting rate of tax for low earners) and done nothing memorable. If people have examples of positive change he's affected I'm all ears.

Right now it seems like he thinks he can rest on his laurels. This is just the people's way of saying that he can't.

No, the people's way of saying that he can't will be to put a government in power that actively works to make their lives worse while enriching a tiny minority of Britons.

We've seen this movie before, it's no mystery what will happen. The Torries will hold power a while, squeezing the middle class until Labour finds a leader who stare purposefully at a camera.

With regards policy there is almost no difference in the three major parties, that would be why less than half the population bothers to vote.

I feel totally unrepresented, none of the political party's have any interest in me other than a cash cow.

The British politician has mastered the art of "more words, less substance."

This isn't even close to true, although it's in the interest of the ruling class to cultivate apathy.

What, like by scrapping the 10p starting rate on tax for low earners or something?

Oh, wait..

Allowing billionaires and city boys to live in London and pay little to no tax through foreign nationality or tax avoidance? Claiming "gifts" instead of "pay hikes"?

Oh, wait..

Incomes for those individuals in the middle of the income distribution have risen at broadly the same rate compared to one another, with those at the lower end gaining slightly.

But overall, the gap between the bottom 10% and the top 10% has widened.

The top 10% of individuals in the UK now receive 40% of all personal income, while the bottom 90% receive 60%.

The top 0.1% get 4.3% of all income - the highest figure in the UK since the 1930s, and three times as much as they received as a share of income in 1979.

Overall, inequality rose sharply between 1979 and 1990, and then levelled off before increasing more slowly to reach a record high by 2001, and return to that level in 2006.

The report says that "income inequality is at its highest level since the late 1940s".

However it adds: "Even if we are more unequal now than we were in the 1940s, we are almost certainly better off in absolute terms."

One, that's a workers paradise when compared to the US.

Two, how is it that voting the Torries into power, who OPENLY ADVOCATE for further stratification of wealth is going help?

I get it. You want change, grr! Voting Labour out of power is like cutting your hand off because your nail clippers broke.
