I'm getting old. When women get old, our arms get flabby...even if we lose weight. I have delightful biceps and the outside of my arms are toned (I forget what that muscle is called), but I'm getting the tell-tale old people flabby wing thing going on. How do I make it stop most effectively? I don't have time to go to a gym but I have 5 pound weights at home for arm toning and such...what's the best exercise for that particularly? Neph? Nio?

You could try a combination of tricep kickbacks and deltoid flys, that should keep things at bay for a while.

To do a tricep kickback:

Lean forward until torso is at 45degree angle to, or parallel with, floor.

Bend knees if more comfortable and keep abs engaged in order to prevent overstressing your lower back.

Bend arm until shoulder to elbow is parallel with torso, allow forearm to hang free.

Bring forearm back(dumbell in hand, of course) until arm is straight(slowly). Slowly allow forearm to return to initial position.

Rinse repeat until you "feel the burn"

Deltoid Fly is done like this:

Lay on a bench or some sort of flat surface that is not wide enough to lend support to your arms but lends adequate support to your back.

Hold arms out(dumbells in hand) horizontally pointing straight away from your torso.

Keeping arms straight, bring your arms up until they are vertically perpendicular to your torso(slowly)

Slowly return arms to original position.

Rinse repeat.

hmmm...I'll try that first one...but I may tip over. If I fall on my head, I'm blaming you.

Try leaning on something, like a coffee table and resting your knee on the table as well. That should help keep you from falling over.

I have a pretty brief exercise routine for toning muscles but I do do these (grandma flaps are frightening). I use only 2lb. weights but doubled up on occasion.

I also do girly pushups to help keep things toned going into your arms (and to keep my little boobies perky).

Yeah my wife does them leaning over the couch with one knee and one hand balancing her on the couch with the other foot firmly planted on the ground. So far no injuries, so I guess it works.

hehe, you overestimate my grace. I'll cover the floor with pillows and make sure the phone is nearby.

I've never had perky boobies, so I guess I won't miss those. I'm at peace with looking better in lingerie.

I would love to be able to go to the gym or sign up for a class, or even go running regularly, but it's really tough both for reasons of time and because when I do have a little down time, I have a three year old. We try to be active by running around outside and playing frisbee and whatnot, but I can't so much just go out for a run. She'd burn the house down...probably on purpose.

My sister is 42 and has a body that is still really toned. She runs everyday. She does a long run (10 miles +) a couple of times a week and shorter runs every day. She has two young kids and does it when her husband and kids are still asleep. Maybe you can get a treadmill if you think it'd be helpful. I don't know if it is an option but you know, running keeps overall toned b/c you continue to have a low percentage of body fat, combined with continuing to do some weight training, which is easy to do at home. The best overall exercise, that they use to measure general health, is either pushups or planks, so you should do those.

lol, i don't run everyday. I'm not sure how she does it. I know more about exercise than I actually practice but I've worked out alot with a trainer.

Yeah, once Smash and I move in together, I'll probably start running again. Until then, I'd probably get in trouble for going out running while the baby is sleeping. I guess I could run around my house in circles with the baby monitor in hand!

It reminds me of my sister and her youngest, who would always sleep if my sister put her in a baby bjorn and ran around the house.

The tricep and delt exercise are good ones. Pushups are what I normally do. I've noticed in the last year that my arms are getting worse and I know that I need to kick up my cardio workouts to burn more body fat.

If you want an online place to keep track of food, calories, workouts, and whatnot, I susgest Sparkpeople. I will be starting up my account again since I'm thinking about training for a triathlon for May 2009.

3 prong. And don't give me that "I don't have time for the gym" crap. If you have time to workout, you have time for a gym. Home gym is ok if you have what oyu need. But shoot, we pay $30 a month and Mrs. Neph gets to drop off the kiddie up to 2hrs a day, everyday. 5lb weights are not enough to see any real results. It might get your started, but you should find it incredibly easy soon.

Diet - You can work out all you want and never lose a lb if you don't alter your diet. Start small, move to non-fat instead of regular, drop any drink with calories. It doesn't have to by a total removal of all fat and simple carbs, just gradual. Try using a very light salad dressing, low fat meats, and hold the cheese. Up your protein to help facilitate muscle growth. As I fight with Thumb, LEAN MUSCLE BURNS FAT. Jsut as well as cardio does.

Exercise - Dumbell kickbacks are good for one of the heads of your tricep, but not necessarily the one you're having issues with. I can't link you any pics of exercises at work, but definitely look for tricep, shoulder (especially rear deltoid), and lats or back muscles. You can't target fat loss areas, it's an overall effect. The best thing to do is to join a power sculpting class or the like at a local gym. Some gym memberships allow you to visit only for the classes even. Pilates is great for sculpting and is a heck of a workout.

Rest - People who sleep less are fatter. Even as children. Get your 8 hours and make sure to give your body time to rest and rebuild between workouts. 48 hrs between working out the same bodypart again.

When you really get tired enough of being out of shape, you'll stop at nothing to make a change.

haha, thanks Neph, but I'm not a giant ******, promise! I'm just getting flabby arms! I don't usually eat more than 1000 calories a day, except on weekends when I decide to have some wine.

Also: I don't want to *build* muscle necessarily, I just don't want flabby ones...so aren't lower weights with more repetitions usually suggested for toning rather than "bulking up" or am I way off there?

To be honest, way off. There is almost no way you can bulk up, but the key to having toned muscles is to, well, build muscle. Any weight you can do more than 20 reps with is way too light.

Lean muscle will burn calories, gives you the toned look. Fat dones't turn into muscle, so you have to decrease one and increase the other.

But I'll be PM'ing with you anyways about my triathlon training. So there. You can say I told you so when I PM you. OK?

That's not particularly healthy Nexa. You should be aiming for 2000 calories a day. If your body isn't getting enough nutrients from those calories then it goes into starvation mode and start holding in all the fats it can while trying to preserve energy, so you will feel sluggish. Try upping your calories to 1500-2000 and doing moderate intensity cardio for 40 minutes, four times a week. This will adjust your body sufficiently.

As for diet, a misconception is that to lose fat you have to cut it off completely. This is just plain wrong. When you do this then your body starts to hold on to fat as much as possible. Start including natural fats in your meals like almonds, peanut butter, or take some flax seed/fish oil pills for healthy Omega 3 fatty acids. For the meals itself, start eating smaller portions more often through the day. This will boost your metabolism greatly, so aim for about 5-6 small meals a day. Be sure to include some form of complex carb and protein source in each meal. Protein synthesis is the most important factor in gaining muscle.

Do these things consistently and you should see some great gains. Good luck!

Another misconception from TV ads. The only way to looks lean is gain muscle and then lower your body fat percentage. The lower weight, higher repetitions method doesn't train the right muscle fibers for growth. Reps between 8-12 in which you will fail with the weight is the ideal for getting a pump and growing.

I'm not big enough to eat 2000 calories a day, honestly. I eat very healthy meals, get all my servings on the food pyramid and all that jazz, haha. The only time I get close to 2000 calories is if I'm eating out for every meal of a day, drinking wine, and having dessert at lunch and dinner. I'd be enormous if I ate 2000 calories a day.

Referring to this: I have milled flax on my breakfast cereal every morning, and often have yogurt with flax in the evening for dessert. I also eat fatty fish, like salmon, at once a week if I can..though that hasn't been as often lately as I'd like. I also snack on almonds. I don't buy peanut butter because I have no self control with it in the house, hahaha.
