...Just out of curiousity. I was checking out http://www.builditsolar.com/index.htm and some of the projects don't look to bad...something to consider for the next house (read: something to keep Smash busy).

We're looking into solar for our hot water.

It's gonna run close to 5k for the total project installed for us - or little more than half that if we get ambitious and do it ourselves. Either way, we've pretty much declared next years tax returns will go towards this.

Neat! Have you looked into the availability of any state or federal grants/tax write offs for the project? I know there are some out there but it depends on the project and location and whatnot.

The state will give you back 30% if it's installed by a licensed installer guy (we'll probably go that route).

Don't let Gbaji tell you that it's not free energy after you pay for the initial equipment.

Cause that's how it works you stupid fuck! You haven't managed to tax the sun yet.

Actually, you still have maintainence costs, so it's not totally without overheads.

Which is not all together different from regular maintainence costs on say, a furnace or car.

I thought we agreed that we were going to just build Hannah a hamster wheel and attach a turbine to that.

Seriously, though, it looks like the things are pretty trivial to install.

What a ******** incentive. "Licensed" to ***** **** down and run cable for a mere $100 an hour.

No overhead costs, only underfoot costs, as we'll still need to pump the water out of our well.

When I was about 15, in the mid 70's, my Dad (a conservative mid-west farmboy) uncharacteristically surprised everyone by having solar panels put on our roof. We were the talk of the town. Even with 3 teenage girls we always had sufficient hot water, and muchly reduced electric bills.

I've not actually done more than read the literature so far, but I think you only need to have the licensed installer inspect and sign off on the system. Still they'd likely over-charge you for their time, and then find something amiss that only they could be right - thus charging you more.

I love Nexa dearly, but when we shack up, it won't be in a state with two Republican Senators.
