And when, exactly, is a fetus fully formed and functioning? For several weeks it's nothing more than a gelatinous mass of cells.

That's the problem really. The line has to be drawn somewhere. Why would the baby not be alive one day before the birth, a week etc. It's a continuous process and as such trying to argue that your version of alive is more correct is fairly silly.

Either way I'd reiterate my point from earlier that consciousness is a bad argument to make. It's not particularly relevant.

Now that I have my internets back:

It's a choice, and has been since 1973, like it or not.

In an utterly predictable move that one easily foresaw seven and a half years ago when Bush appointed a Surgeon General who refused to prescribe birth control to single women, the HHS is attempting to restrict women's access to birth control by defining many of the more popular forms of birth control as "abortion" so that women cannot acquire these forms of contraception from clinics which receive federal funding.

Further information may be found here.

Who's surprised? Not me.

Surprised that you mistook an internal proposal for discussion as a done policy change? Not really. The article was written in a way designed to invoke the most fear possible...

Look. The science of procreation (yeah. The actual science), does have two broad interpretations of the start of life. One at conception, one at implantation (as the article says if you read the whole thing). Any organization that makes policy decisions based on that science has to consider both of them. The fact that they do doesn't mean anything other then that they're being thorough.

Alert me when they actually make policy changes that categorize taking the pill as "abortion" in the legal sense.

Yeah the article was pretty out there in it's rhetoric.

But if this draft proposal does lend presedence in defining some birth control as abortion, that's pretty detrimental.

It's the Huffington Post. What did you expect? ;)

Yeah. I get that in a "keep an eye on trends" kind of thing. But alarmist "OMG!!! Look what the evil Republicans are doing now!!!" rhetoric is far far far beyond that. It's not even a draft proposal as far as I can see (the article isn't super clear and just says "proposal"). I doubt if we're talking about a document even at the "do we really want to implement this?" stage.

More likely, this was some working group proposal, where their task is to present proposals based purely on the science of the issue at hand. This would be well below any policy level within the organization.

The only real surprise here is that usually the liberal media outlets start the "OMG, don't vote Republican or they'll outlaw abortion" rhetoric a bit earlier in election season then this. Usually, we've had about 8 threads on the subject by this time in an election year. They're slacking I guess...

Do you think this might have anything to do with McCain stating we should outlaw abortion?

Nah, that's crazy. It's all a vast conspiracy on the part of the media. The same media that flogged the Jessie Jackson thing for days and before that the Jeremiah Wright thing for weeks. Because they want Obama to win, see.....

hahahaha, I'm picturing some ******* pulling out a money clip and making a show of trying to find small bills with which to pay for an issue of the Wall Street Journal at a news stand...but instead of money, it's okra.

Stating that we should, or that he would? Those are two different things you know...

You're right. A candidate holding a mainstream position on a mainstream issue should be huge news. Huge! But a candidate attending an anti-american church for 20 years. Well, that's just not newsworthy at all...

Did that really make sense inside your head when you were writing it?

He wants to appoint Justices to overturn Roe v Wade and feels it's the duty of the federal government to lend assistance to private organizations attempting to outlaw it at the state level.
McCain's website wrote:
John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench.

Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.

However, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion. Once the question is returned to the states, the fight for life will be one of courage and compassion - the courage of a pregnant mother to bring her child into the world and the compassion of civil society to meet her needs and those of her newborn baby. The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level.

If you're against abortion and it's a key issue with you then nothing, I guess. I'm not really interested in the abortion debate, just noting that McCain wants to see RvW overturned and then assist private groups in getting it banned on the state level.

You're one to talk about ignorance. I also like how you feel the need to put down anyone who has a garden, it illustrates what an elightened and sophisticated lady you are.

Nonsense. I'd never insult a garden. But we all know you get your okra from the Piggly Wiggly.
