The New Yorker drop a clanger.
When thinking about a fresh angle to support your particular choise for leader of the country, it probably not a great idea to portray him as a threat and his wife as a terrorist, satire works on very few people as a rule (Just look at half the posters here they recognise my ironic and satirical posts 1/3rd of the time.)

Not entirely sure what they where thinking but it's generally accepted by now that race and terrorism doesn't really fit into mainstream humoUr of any kind much less a subtle form like satire.

I was slightly worried by the statement that 10% of Americans still think he's a muslim though are that many Americans mindbogglingly stupid?

The New Yorker is widely known, domestically at least, to be a liberal magazine whose target audience is the sophisticated urbanite.

Anyone who takes this cover seriously is A) stupid and B) a registered Republican.

Only if you accept the idea that the existence of a liberal leaning magazine which has never attempted to be anything else is indicative of a larger "liberal conspiracy".

It's not like they claim to be "fair and balanced" or anything.

It's not news. It doesn't even pretend to be news.

You should pick one up and read it sometime.

"Generally accepted" by whom?

And satire is the ideal use of said subject material, not the "much less" use.

I should add that the cover is typical New Yorker anyway.

Most of their covers fall into one of the following categories:

- Silly observational humor about a current cultural trend

- Silly observational humor about big city life

- Absurdist visual throw-away gag

- Political satire

- Pretty picture

Only once in a blue moon do they have a serious cover.

I thought the cover was obviously satire although I guess I understand why Camp Obama (& McCain) would need to fire off a statement about it. I'm sure Obama's folks are in Eternal Vigilance mode and McCain can't afford to say "Bah, it's funny!"

I have to assume Obama's advisers are quietly celebrating the free publicity and expanded chance to get the message out.

Being a mindbogglingly stupid American, I had to go search the phrase "drop a clanger". My assumption based on context was close enough anyways.

On the morning AM shows, they were saying that complainers about the cover were wrong to complain because it was satire, which got them to explain that it was satire because the right-wing character attacks were all overblown and eventually settle into "Look, there's policy complaints you can have but these attacks against his patriotism, religion and associations are idiotic." After all, if they said that the attacks against his character were true, that'd mean the cover wasn't satire and they couldn't ***** about the people who didn't like the cover.

It was great Smiley: grin

I seem to remember clanger is a WW2 term for a dud torpedo that hits the target, maybe that is the source of the expression.

Speaking of mindbogglingly stupid. What about this cover makes you (or anyone for that matter) think about Americans who believe he's a muslim?

Don't get me wrong. It's a clever cover. But probably not for the reasons you think...

Right, because you're the *only* one who can see it for what it *really* is.

I don't know why people get so upset about Obama being a fanatical Muslim terrrrrist who hates Merica.

What better way to protect the country against Al-Qaeda than being lead by one of them?

Silver lining, people, silver lining...

I'm not a sophisticated urbanite, I'm an urbane sophisticate. But I agree with Samira on this one.

I have to say that if I were Muslim in this country, I'd think the "accusations" of Obama being Muslim being use as fuel against him (effectively with some) really sucks ***. Obama reacts by having to necessarily distance himself from Muslims and people constantly make references to Muslims as not being real Americans. As if the last decade wasn't bad enough-- I've known Middle Easterners with no possible tie to terrorist groups have the FBI show up at their house--there is a daily reminder that God Forbid, anyone with power has any Muslim relatives.
