After quiting WoW, I set forth on a journey to find some other pixel based time sink in which to, well, sink time in to. I feel like I'm in some sort of gaming limbo, nothing seems to hold my interest for more than a day or two. I can't tell if I'm just being picky or *gasp*, growing out of gaming. I've always enjoyed it as a hobby, but lately I feel like I am forcing my self ot paly rather than enjoying it. And with my 360 RRODed, I'm left wondering what to do. Anyone else in the same boat?

EQ2 - Played the Gey Fey. It was exactly the same game as WoW. Maybe I'll come back to it, but I wanted to see what else was out there. Couldn't think of any hook, except that it was slightly different and had a ton of content.

FFXI - Hell no, actually fired it up, took 2 hours just to get to anywhere worth leveling, an hour to get back after my party vanished. I don't have this much time.

LoTRO - So boring....tried playing during the free 48 hour promo and realized how utterly boring this game was.

AoC - Really enjoyed it, but way too many issues that were far too glaring to keep putting time against.

This is where I really started to get desperate...

CoH/CoV picked both up for $20, thought I would give it a run. Good god the cities are devoid of life except for people getting robbed every 2 steps by the same thugs. You can only use the same 2 powers for so long before it getting old quickly.

AO - What the hell, it was free. I'm sure it was a gem in it's time, but man it didn't age very well. Played for less time that it took to sign up for the membership.

GuildWars - 2 week trial with CoH purchase. Not bad, although the maps were simply the most frustrating things I've ever experienced. Everything is a path, monsters instant respawn everytime you exit a zone and come back, meh.

At this point, I had more fun creating WoW alts and just doing the same things over and over again. Knowing full well that everything was going to become worthless in November.

I'm in the same boat and I have been since I stopped playing EQ oh so long ago. I'm waiting 'til WAR comes out this Fall, if that doesn't do it for me I'm probably going to lose all interest in MMO's unless something really different comes along.

CoH was fun for a while (especially once you get more than two powers) but I burnt out on it around lvl 25 or so. I only lasted that long because I was playing with Nadenu and it was fun getting her killed. What was awesome was that I must have killed her about a hundred times while our groups healer-type and then, in WoW, she was still foolish enough to group with my priest and expect better results Smiley: laugh

I don't care enough to "defend" LoTRO but I am curious what was so boring. Yard trash is yard trash in my opinion and most MMORPGs all start out with the same rat/spider killing and courier quests.

I've been playing my free months of EQ1 although eventually the nostalgia will wear off, I'm sure.

Oddly enough, I've heard the same thing. I'm not going to bother unless they come out with some sort of trial or I can pick it up for less than $20 though.

LoTRO just seemed too much like LARPing. Nothing really flashy about shouting really loud, banging my staff against the ground, and occasionally picking up wild cabbage to make stew. Mystical dragons, giant eagles, and I have to ride a lame ******* pony? No thanks. Lore or not, I thought it was pretty boring.

Oh, sure. You were probably mad that AoC didn't have dwarfs.

There's always Pirates of the Burning Sea. Or else maybe dipping your honey-covered wang into a jar of fire ants.

Really all those games are the same pretty much thing. What makes them fun is what you choose to do while logged in. In my opinion the people are really what makes an MMO interesting.

Might try Eve for soemthing different. I had a lot of fun with it, but it's way to much PvP for me. Very, very pretty, lots of exhilirationg exploration as you can get ganked most anywhere you go. The 3-D space battle add a nice twist to combat and there's a pretty complex crafting system if you're into that.

Ill second the Eve idea.

I played it for a bit and it was pretty fun.

it takes a while to get from one place to another though.

I had a friend who plays it alot, get me waypoints and escorted me out to the middle of nowhere where i could play in peace though.

Eveonline bored the **** out of me which is probably why I gave my account to Danalog. Looks great, but repetitive missions and mining = snooze.

EQII has its ups and downs. I enjoyed it but in the end it wasnt for me.

FFXI is an abortion of a game

CoH is entertaining for 6 mins

Lotro is boring

AoC needs work

I still play WoW but only cause I raid.

I played FFXI and WoW and found myself in the same boat as the OP so I actually reactivated an account to a roleplaying text based MUD I used to play called Gemstone IV. I'm enjoying it so far. Not even missing the graphical element yet. I have a short attention span though so who knows how long that lasts.

I am the eternal optimist.

My step-daughter was here a few weeks ago and I peeked at her laptop - she was playing CoH. Well, playing might be a strong word. She was making a ton of characters. That's really the only fun part of that game, haha.

I will admit, CoH has some pretty awesome char creation. AoC rocks in that regards too, but mostly due to it's graphics.

I did hear today that in 2-3 weeks I'll have my 360 back. Which means I'll get to play the Battlefied Bad Company game that caused it to freeze on the first try.

Any fans of shooters out there should give it a try, it's a lot of fun.

Enjoy taking a break - I recommend it. I burned out on AoC from creating too many toons but I had a nice 2 week sabbatical from gaming. I'll stick with AoC and WoW until Warhammer Online comes out. I still have to get back to GTA4 at some point (along with some other X-Box 360 games).

Then this was just announced the other day - Diablo 3. Only problem is, it probably won't be out for another year or so. Still, check it out:

Teaser

Game Play Pt. 1

Game Play Pt. 2 - More interesting than pt. 1 (also includes a new player class), but good info on Pt. 1

Heck, I may just fire up Diablo 2: LoD for grins.

Personally I'll be playing WoW as long as the OoT guild is alive and kicking. Nothing on the horizon looks very interesting to me, apart from Darkfall, and I'm still not convinced that's anything other than vaporware. If Vanguard had only had a decent population, I'd still be playing it. I still think (and I'm not sure if Smoggy and Git would agree, but I suspect they would) that Vanguard captured the essence of a sandbox MMO better than anything since EQ. It had dwarves, and grouping. EVE is a cool game, but it's rather difficult to get into as a newb at this stage.

I do dig WoW, but if I wasn't able to get on vent and be abusive to a bunch of people who consider me a God I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much.

Which leads to a bit of a tangent; I don't think I'll be able to play an MMO without ventrilo or the like ever again. I used to hate the idea, too. I used to think of using VOIP for gaming as cheating, and immersion breaking.

But I find that when I like the people I'm playing with, I want to get to know them better, and that is facilitated more easily through VOIP.

I mean, can you guys imagine how fUcking cool the Asylum WoW guild would have been if we had all been on ventrilo?

I'm half-drunk, by the way. So blow me if I'm rambling.

Try switching genres. I've given up on fantasy/RPGs (for now at least) and pretty much only play Battlefield 2 (modded) these days. Try that, or something like COD4.

This is probably more effort than you want to put in but do you happen to have the Wings of the Goddess expansion for FFXI? Campaign makes it pretty easy to gain xp solo from level 50 on up, I participated in a couple of battles spaced over an hour or so this morning and walked away with 1500xp. Not too shabby really and I don't have time either with both the kids and all.

Fixed that for you Smiley: tongue

It's a beautiful game and wide open spaces - I wish we could have had more people online to group and guild with. I wish we could have seen the full potential of the game. Unfortunately, I uninstalled Vanguard as I needed room for LoTRO (I'll probably uninstall that, too, since I never play it), WoW, and AoC. While AoC is a beautiful game, it feels like a console game and the world feels confined - still, I enjoy it - even without Dwarves, but since it's a different fantasy world and I appreciate it's canon, I don't mind it. I grew up reading Conan novels - it's all good for me.

QFT - My guild in WoW uses it and they are a fun bunch of people - definitely made some good friends there. AoC guild has it, too, but there's not much chatting even though they are good folks.

I think it would have cleared up a lot of miscommunication and we'd still be going strong today, in one form or another. Hell, it's never too late to get on Vent just to chat as long as someone has an available Vent server - I totally would love to chat with everyone on here any time...and we don't even have to be in a game to do it, but would be more fun.

I submit that no game will ever come close to the experience of playing EQ for the first time. No power levelers, no maps, and no idea what we were doing. It was glorious. Sadly, it was also not going to last. Every game since has been a pale imitation of the real thing.

And get off my yard!
