Did you Californians get your head-sets?

All the research seems to say that it's not holding the phone that causes problems but engaging in conversations that is the real distraction.

None-the-less, hand-held cell phone chatting while driving is now illegal in California.

I'm thinking that rather than try and illegalize our drive-time activities we just need to automate our automobiles. Why are we not yet able to simply program our cars to take us to our destination...safely. Seems like something we'd have up and running by now. I blame the Bush administration.

Good idea, it could work.

But we'd need some sort of pre-agreed "lines" where these cars could drive themselves safely, without risking collisions with other cars. Maybe we could designate some lines, or "tracks" as scientists call them, and link all the cars together, so that they would form some sort of "train" on those "tracks". And then people would get off where ever they needed to get off. Also, we could make it run on electricty, and be real quick and environmentally friendly.

Now if only someone could come up with this...

I meant it in a nice way...

But sure, I'm all for automated cars, it'll save me from having to pass my driving license.

City of Chicago has the same law, but not elsewhere in Illinois.

Apparently the people that came up with this don't realize that most people drive with one hand anyway?

Although I realize it's just politics and it doesn't really matter what the research says. It's annoying nonetheless.

We don't have that law yet, except for teens, they get their license revoked, older peeps get a inattentive driving ticket or some such. They did however, just make it so that if you have an accident and you were on the phone or texting, you are automatically at fault. My son is not allowed to use the phone while driving, and we call him regularly to check when we know he's driving. It's funny too...

Mom calls son: *ring ring ring* "Hello, this is T, leave a message."
Larry calls me: "Hey Trey is driving, what do you want?"
Mom: "Tell T... (whatever it was I wanted to tell him, or that I am just checking up)"

It must be nice to have a secretary!

A good thing for CA though, under 18 is prohibited from using any feature on a cellphone, PDA, or laptop while driving. Hands-free or not, no cells for the kiddies in the car.

I hate using the earpiece. I know I'm going to have to, but I hate the feeling of it in my ear. And I always feel like an idiot talking into it.

I use the speakerphone. My local NPR station says it is legal. Obviously I have not read the law to confirm that it is, but I think it is likely it is. Basically if they see the cellphone pressed against your ear, they can pull you over.

Sounds like it could be a judicious nightmare.

"Honest judge that was my Shick battery powered shaver against my face - not my cell phone"

It seems it's a redundant law as I'm sure 'distracted driving' is already on the books, but necessary none the less, because people are so humanly self-absorbed. It should also be illegal to use them while standing in doorways, walking down hallways, attending meetings, while sitting down for a meal, when talking to face-to-face with someone else...,...,!!!,

Washington state's restriction to hands-free driving went into effect today as well. I've seen just as many people with their phone glued to their ears as ever though.

I don't know about California but here it is a secondary violation meaning the police can only cite you if they pull you over for some other offence.

The same law is in effect since midnight in Quebec as well.

Picked up the new Jawbone for my wife and myself last weeek in anticipation of this law. Love it. No more speakerphone and the noise cancelation on it is second to none.

Only gripe? The stock rubber ear pieces that come with it hate my retarded ear so i went out and bought the Jabra MiniGels. They slip right over the ear piece for great comfort and i dont need the over the ear hook.

That's neat. I intend to get a new cell phone in October when my current contract is up for renewal and I'm going to get some variety of hands free device at that point.

That would suck if your car stereo was broken and you used it as an mp3 player...

I've been using an earpiece for my cellphone for a couple years now, so the law isn't any sort of change for me at all. Honestly, once you get used to it, you'll wonder how you ever managed to fumble around with a cellphone while driving before.

As to the law itself? My understanding is that it is part of the same distracted driving set, they've just explicitly defined driving while using a cellphone without a hands-free device as automatically meaning you're distracted. I don't know how much of a difference it's actually going to make either way though, since I still see folks driving while eating, applying makeup, etc. Heck. I once drove next to a guy on the freeway who was actually reading a book! All of those activities can already get you a ticket if a cop sees you, but it's not like it stops the idiots from trying to do eight things at once while barreling down the road in a ton of metal and plastic.

I'm kinda on the fence in terms of whether the distraction is so much from the talking or holding the cellphone. However, I think that everything being equal, not occupying your hands dialing a cellphone is a good thing...

Judging from studies, it's actually the negative effect on other drivers SEEING someone on the phone that is the most detrimental to safety.

I'm neither of those but I still got it. I know, I know, I might be shot down in the street for attempting to be something i'm not but the functionality of it is worth the risk.

I got a ticket in NYC last fall for talking on my cellphone. The cop was not amused when, upon telling me to use the Bluetooth headset sitting on the dashboard, I pulled out another phone that the Bluetooth was connected to.

Now I have two headsets, one for each phone. I even sometimes forget myself and wear both at the same time, until I start feeling silly and take one off.
