Just because its dull as f'uck around here, and as far as I can tell, no-one else has mentioned it yet......

What about McCains idea to award US$300 million to whoever comes up with a battery that weans Americans (and by extension, the rest of us) off petrol driven cars?

I really think McCain might be onto something here.

Just think! With enough prize money, we could solve anything!

If it works for batteries, why not extend it to lots of other stuff, like war, famine, health care....

I think someone has been watching too many game shows....Smiley: oyvey

I reckon it will be won by some old fella working in his shed at the bottom of his garden, probably a New Zealander.

A bullsh*t campaign promise? Yeah, he's onto that.

He should promise $1Billion to the first people who can play "flight of the butterfly" on the *** flute while he's at it.

It would only apply to 'Mericans. Don't be silly. Give some foreigner money for developing technology beneficial to the whole world? What do we look like, Sweden?

It's a bit like the Google RE < C thing.

It's good, though. If people are motivatd by money, you might as well use that motivation to produce something good.

McCain was getting panned for this pretty hard on Pubbie Talk Radio the other morning. Complaints about why McCain didn't trust the free market to create a solution and a waste of tax-payer dollars to put on bounty on a technology which would be worth billions on its own anyway, etc. Ironically, they tended more towards Obama's stance that if the government is hot to trot for such a battery, they'd be better served telling NASA "We're paying you guys, now get to work and develop this battery".

While it doesn't do anything additional to put me off from McCain, it's very obviously a gimmick. Maybe if he took it from his wife's checkbook I'd be more impressed Smiley: wink2

is this a trick question.

Lots of gadget-guyz could probably come up with a battery that would efficiently run a car, but weaning us off petrol is a whole 'nother matter. We'll need strong drugs...dispensed far and wide...

Funding ongoing research would be better than awarding prizes for research. Otherwise you're only rewarding the inventor of the final product, while ignoring all the important but tiny little technological advancements from disparate sources.

Hey, with enough financial incentive, people will really do anything. As ill-conceived and poorly planned as his execution was, the idea of a tangible dollar reward is a great motivator.

There either already is an automotive x-prize, which is quite similar (I think the contest has not officially begun yet). It's for a very high MPG car. Prize is smaller. The goal, however, could be somewhat more attainable (I don't know the details of either).

It's a great motivator for applications with no large market, like spaceships, or robot cars. It's a stupid empty hand waive at something that would generate billions anyway.

Morons will like it, of course, because they don't understand the issue but have decided "we have to do something!!!!111" Discerning when the something is completely useless isn't in their skill set.

#11REDACTED, Posted: Jun 27 2008 at 2:50 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) its a campaign promise created to make a good sound bite and polls well for moderate conservatives. its also peanuts compared to the 14 BILLION dollars in tax breaks we give the oil industry every year.
