The only downside is that life gets boring as heck now. Kind of equivalent to being bored as a 12 year old. I can't stand watching TV or playing computer games because they are dull as hell. Sure, the wife and I are getting more exercise and stuff, the house is in better shape then ever, and I have never been more of a responsible grown-up. I can't say whether I like it or not...
So are some humans just predisposed for a self-destruct gene? Are there any similiar people out there that can share their input?
Yes. There's evidence of a genetic heritage, that, when
combined with something very stressful happening in your adult life, or with an unhappy childhood, causes almost certain addiction.
It's not just addictions.
It can be a genetic predisposition to depression, Ant-social behaviour, or psychosis. Probably a host of other problems, that haven't been investigated yet.
Basically you are born with a "faulty" gene. If you have a happy childhood, and no major traumas as an adult, this faulty gene will probably never express itself. But under stress, the gene activates, and merry hell ensues in the possessor's brain. Find the right help that works for you, and most people can re-train their brain to be more stable and have an improved long-term mood. If you have a particular addiction with a genetic component though, you are likely to have to stay off your particular demon entirely, you will have to be VERY strong willed to stop at "just a little" on special, rare, social occasions.
