I'm gonna be a camp counselor this summer. No way right!?Follow

#1 Jun 05 2008 at 10:28 PM Rating: Decent
This coming Monday I'll be starting my new job as the Head Male Counselor at the local summer camp ran by the Salvation Army, located down by the river. (I'll be livin in a van baby!) I have to say I'm pretty excited, I'll be staying there during the week in my own cabin(not in a van!)with weekends off, so I'll just go home to my grandparents on weekends. The pay is a nice amount compared to my ol' gas station job, and with the money I make I'll be able to afford my tution at University of Arkansas this Fall, Go Hogs! But I was wondering if any of you had experience in this sort of ordeal, for this is my first time working with kids, which by the way I love kids. The kids range from 8 to 12 I think so I'm pretty sure I can handle them. We get to go do things like canoe, hike, ropes course, arts and craft and all that cool junk, and the best thing about it is I'm in charge of the other counselors! I'll put some pics on here of the goods time we'll have! Summer fun in the sun!

Oh and theres wireless internet there so I'll be on WoW half the time, the kids can wait awhile eh??

The lower end of that age group is a blast. The higher end, especially the girls, are Hanna-Montana nutso boy-crazy. I was a camp counselor once, and had a great time with most the kids, but a harder time keeping the girls focused because their hormones had just made their presence known and they were a great giggly mess.

The one activity I did that was a hit with both groups was this series of activity stations which began with a dance lesson and ended up with a relaxation exercise. They took the relaxation exercise very seriously and were amazed at how it made them feel.

Just remember to make the unpopular kid be the target during archery class. Teaches the other boys about Kentucky windage and stuff.

What's that other movie with Michael J. Fox and Nancy Keen as camp counselors? I hearted that movie too.

And also that other summer camp movie where there was a bet who was going to lose their virginity first.

I don't know. The other great summer camp movie was Little Darlings with cracktastic Tatum O' Neal and Bipolar lesbian icon, Kristie McNichol and her feathered Shawn Cassidy hair. They were competing to see who'd lose their virginity. Matt Dillon was in it. Of course, it was 1980.

lulz, we totally thought about Little Darlings at the same time.

Remember the movie, "My Bodyguard." Besides Matt Dillon, that movie also has Adam Baldwin who was on Firefly. I saw My Bodyguard so much as a kid. Also with Christopher Makepeace. The uppermiddle class life of Chicago kids was fascinating to a hick like me.

I'm just curious what exactly qualifies him as "Head Male Counselor" when he's needing to ask on an internet gaming forum for advice on how to deal with kids...

I know how to handle kids, ive got nephews and nieces. I dont actually counsel them, I just make sure the other workers in charge of the kids are doing their job and that they complete the activities scheduled for that day. The reason I got the job is because the administrator in charge is a good friend of mine, he offered the job to me.

Oh yeh the robot avatar, lol it was Gir, off a cartoon show.

I did the summer camp schtick when I was 18. Eight weeks of me and some girl scouts. It was one of those "character building experiences" and it's also well known as the lowest paid wage slave of all wave slaves -- I think I was paid $800 for the whole eight weeks. I make about three times that much in a month these days.

Actually its not low paying at all, its why I took the job. The pay is gonna pay for my tution this year.

You must have worked at a better camp than I did XD

I was on duty 22 hours a day. My breaks were Saturdays and 2 hours a day all other days. Based on that scale of pay, I was getting around $1 an hour.
