My problem with actually doing anything in the newer zones is I'd need a group, and it's been so long since I healed in EQ, I'm sure I'd really suck at it (my main is a cleric). I might try to get a group one night and just explain that I'm one of the returning noobs, and would they be patient with me.
Of course, I *still* don't know how to get to the newer areas.
But on the off-chance I find them, I've heard there's more soloable stuff now - is this true for clerics? Missions, or whatever?

Has to be said i am quite enjoying EQ2, enough to make it a permanent addition to my gaming time but not so much that it will be the primary MMo of choice.

That's what was killing me. I realized I'll have to play in first person again, since there's no tab-targetting, you have to actually click the mob. And I had forgot how to check my item stats too. What you do is right click on the item and hold, then finally a window pops up. To keep the window open, you have to keep your right mouse button down, and drag it off the item.
There's a much better way to do this btw.
If you alt-lclick the item, it'll pop up like normal, but the window will stay open (close by clicking the "x" at the top right corner).
Link items into a chat line by opening the window like that and then clicking on the item icon in the window. It'll automatically put a link for the item into whatever chat line you're currently typing in.
