We get quite a few American Evangelists around Birmingham. Always smartly turned out in blazers, razor sharp creases in their slacks and very shiny shoes. Always very polite, but usually pushy. I often have to tell them I'm not interested 2 or 3 times before they give up, and I've got to the "Will you just FUck Off!" stage more than once.

Alum Rock Road is in a part of Birmingham that's 99% Pakistani/Bangladeshi/Afghani. It's known to have a few pockets of extreme fundamentalists - last year a few lads were arrested for plotting to capture a British Muslim soldier and film themselves beheading him.

It's what you might call a 'sensitive area' and is policed accordingly - high presence, softly-softly approach.

You can see where this is going. .

A young Police Officer saw two US Christians trying to leaflet the area, and introduce these poor heathens to the ways of ickle baby Jebus - he wasn't surprised to see a growing interest from some of the younger, shadier residents.

The evil cop had the gall, nay, the unchristian nerve to advise them to GTFO.

It appears he was infringing their human rights.

Quote:

Two Christians claim a police community support officer told them to stop leafleting in an area of east Birmingham where many Muslims live.

The Christian Institute has complained to West Midlands Police the men were told to leave Alum Rock Road.

The US Christians said they were advised they were committing a hate crime by trying to convert Muslims.

West Midlands Police has investigated the complaint and said the officer intervened to defuse a row.

Arthur Cunningham and Joseph Abraham, a pastor at Grace Bible Fellowship Church, in Saltley, Birmingham, had been distributing leaflets in nearby Alum Rock on 19 February when the police support officer (PCSO) intervened.

Apology demanded

They claimed he warned them to leave the area, saying: "If you come back here and get beat up, well you have been warned."

Mr Cunningham and Mr Abraham then agreed to leave.

The men, backed by the Christian Institute, have complained to the force, saying their human rights were infringed.

They have also demanded an apology and damages.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said the complaint had been investigated by the force.

She said: "The investigation concluded that the PCSO acted with the best of intentions when he intervened to diffuse a heated argument between two groups of men."

The spokeswoman added that following the investigation the PCSO had been offered "guidance around what constitutes a hate crime as well as his communication style".

I can imagine the scene if a bunch of Bearded, shaven-headed muslims started handing out Q'uran's in Hicksville Tennessee.

well for the cop to call it a HATE crime, that is a tad extreme on its own. now to point out that if you continue you will probably get in a physical confrontation, that is an other matter. if the peeps handing out the leaflets then chose to stay and got beat up, well then that would be their fault.

The cop should have let them get beaten. It would probably have been dereliction of duty on his part to let it happen, but those two would have learned a valuable life lesson.

sadly that is the fix the cop was in. he should not of lied and called what they were doing a hate crime, but she also could not allow them to continue participating in something that could get them killed at worse, or at least beating about roughly.

Let's not encourage martyrdom, thanks.

Ties in nicely with this topic

Honestly, I don't mind people following whatever religion they choose : Christianm, LDS, Muslim, Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster .

I get annoyed when they knock on my door and won;t go away though - conversations tend to start like this :

*Knock Knock*
/em puts down beer, sighs heavily, and thinks ' If its that cow from number 11 wanting to borrow my strimmer, she can sod off this time'
/em opens door

Strangers : Hello, we're Elder Merril and Elder Floppyphillyknockkysaggyboob, we were wondering if you have a few minutes to talk about the Church of Latter Day saints, and about Joseph Smith .

Me : Sorry, I'm don't have time .

Elder Berry : It will only take a minute . We want to talk to you about The Great Apostasy.

Me : I don't have time to talk about punctuation, I'm trying to watch Qi and have a beer .

Elder somethingorother : We'd like to talk to you more about our beliefs

Me : Seriously, please, noooo!!

and on and on, ad infinitum.

i tend to use the line:

"I am very comfortable with my relationship between me and my maker. Please have a good day." closes door in face.

Many, many years ago a group of christians' came aboard the Constellation and started handing out tracts. (They had paid admission) They handed one to the then director who took one look at it and said he couldnt accept it as the crew were Odinites. (HMS Odin had been tied up along side the previous week. I said it was Many years ago, almost 40 now.) When they asked what Odinites were they were told about worshiping Odin the all father of Norse mythology. Not only did they leave the ship, but on the way out they took a tract out of the hand of one of the crew who was reading it. (Who just happened to be a former catholic brother/monk.)

Since then I have usually used the same arguement to others. Unless I feel like a nice discussion to pass the time away. ..

I have a bumper sticker that reads "Who are you to question why your god doesn't want me to believe in him."

This is usually the point where closing the door in their faces is the quickest and most gracious way out. They might go back and pray for your soul and whatnot, but at least it gets them off your stoop.

Fixed - Dracoid refined that technique and it's highly effective.

If the PCS did refer to hate crimes, they messed up. If I know these evangelist types, s/he'd probably tried 15 other ways of stopping these morons causing a riot before scouring the bottom of the argument barrel.

Yeah, not a hate crime but also not a police matter if they persist after having been warned.

He could have been a bit more clear about the reluctance of the police/rescue workers to wade into a riot to save their dumb butts, never mind dealing with the repercussions of the riot in other ways.

AND threatened that they'd be liable for expenses incurred, never mind injuries to others.

because Christians should only proselytize to other Christians and in certain designated areas lest they be beaten to death.

I'm all for them being beaten to death any time they don't shut up about their ludicrous "guy nailed to a tree for my sins" wackiness.

Or better yet, they can not proselytize at all and perhaps recognize that others are just as dead set in their make-belief system as they are in their evangelism and quit bugging people.

There are a few problems with your (perceived, at least) underlying assumptions.

If a given missionary is only putting himself at risk, then it's far more acceptable that he go forth and do that.

It's almost never the case, though, that he's the only one in harm's way.

The breathtaking arrogance of assuming that other people are lost souls without one's intervention is a totally separate issue. Why are these people not doing their missionary work among prisoners, for example? Why proselytize among people who already have religious beliefs that tie in with their way of life?

So discriminating against someone based on their religion is no longer classified as a hate crime?

Apparently you misunderstood my point, which is not at all unexpected.

The pamphleteers were not committing a hate crime, but they were putting themselves at risk. Is that more clear for you?

I'll just go to confession later, and I'll be all set. That's what the Christerbunny is all about, right? Cause as much pain as you want, do as much damage, lie, cheat, steal, just feel badly about it the next day.

Why should Christians be afraid for their lifes simply because of where they're distributing pamplets? Oh that's right peaceful muslims must never be provoked for fear of offending them to the point of violence and civil unrest.
Why should anyone be in fear for their lives from any other human being ever?

...oh yeah, cuz we're all mostly ignorant self-righteous twids!
