My point was that, as far as elementary mistakes go, it was a rather meaningless one. Certianly not on par with mistaking which nations are training Al'Qaeda, getting it wrong in several venues and then arguing with the press about it and insisting that they should go look it up until finally your buddy tells you on stage to STFU and stop embarassing yourself.

Given the two options, I'll take "wrong concentration camp" every time.

I see you dropped off the "Payne was never in the army!" bandwagon, though.

Whoops, so it does. I rescind my earlier statement then although I still feel that, in the context you're using it, it's misleading.

Again... huh?

I've never said that Bush lied on accident. I said that he deliberately manipulated intelligence and provided a false view of the information to make his case for the war. Now, you might feel that I'm wrong in saying that but it doesn't change my definition of a lie.

I don't know the answer to this, but is "on accident" a common phrase in the midwest? It sounds so wrong when I picture saying it, but I'm too lazy to google it.

Probably.

Or else I'm just ill-spoken Smiley: smile

Edit: Google gives 1,280,000 returns for the quoted phrase "on accident" (and the first one is an admonishment not to use it). Here's an article about it!

No, no, I'm sure it sounds natural when you say "ahhhn akeseedent"

Were I to say "n axeden" though, it would seem jarring.

I pick up the phase "on accident" from my family, so expect it a mid-west or Chicago thing.

Kinda of like how a root bear float is called Black Cows.

No way. According to the nutball who researched this, it's a national crisis affecting our youth. Although s/he did find that, "The Indiana and Michigan data provide clear evidence that young people in these Midwestern states accept and use on accident in both working class and upper class communities."

If that's the case, it'll be correct shortly and "by accident" will be arcane. Which isn't something that really bothers me, although it does make Nexa ******* insane.

Perhaps not. Don't really remember. I'm pretty sure you defended people who did. You certainly took part in several pages of debate over the correct definition of the word "lie", and you *didn't* have the same viewpoint on it as you do in this thread.

False. You're probably thinking of me, frankly. I'd call Obama's mistake a lie. I don't think intent matters much in most situations, though.

Problem?? Hell, this might finally give Obama the cred he needs among white Catholic voters!

Jo, I have not seen where a Mr. C.W. Payne was in Patton's Army. A C.T. Payne maybe, but it hasn't been determined definitively that he is Barry's great-uncle yet. As common as the Payne name is, the middle initial could very be another entirely. To the best of my knowledge the Obama campaign hasn't cleared up that matter.

No record of a C.W Payne having served in the 89th Div in World War II.

To the best of my knowledge, anything beyond "he made a mistake" would be idiotic from a PR standpoint. This isn't going to get any traction regardless of how many times Fox runs the story. If HE had claimed to serve somewhere, sure. This is nothing. This is McCain confusing Sunnis and Shiites.

Ok, I can see that, Smash. However, it remains to be seen if this mysterious uncle who didn't want to be interviewed didn't want to talk to the press because he suffered so much from PTSD or because he was never actually there. All we know at this point is that a Pfc Payne served with the 89th, but his initials are different from the uncle of the leading Democratic presidential candidate.

Obvious first question, who gave the middle initial as "W"? From what I can tell, some blogger looked at some military records, found a Charles W Payne from Kansas in the Navy and declared him to be the guy.

Yeah, ok. Maybe the guy lied about it. Maybe Obama didn't fact check someone's story about his great uncle. It's not relevant because he (Obama) pretty clearly didn't fabricate the story wholesale or lie about his own life. He got something trivial wrong. No one who would have voted for him otherwise is going to change their mind over this. It's unlikely in the extreme it'll even be remembered three weeks from now, let alone five months from now.

Both McCain and Obama are going to end up saying false things between now and then. When your every word is recorded and analyzed, that's going to happen. The things that will hurt are the clear fabrications for political gain, not the lazy mistakes.

Everything else aside, there still is the issue of Obama's delusional plan to talk world leaders antagonistic to us into submission. That and the whole carrot/stick thing with the World Trade Organization.

http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/05/another-major-foreign-policy-gaffe-by.html

Barry is naive to think he can out-think or out talk other leaders. It is the very same hubris which Dubya got caught in when he looked into Putin's eyes and saw a trustworthy man. Time to wise up, Barry. Your silver tongue may fool the masses, but to our enemies, you're just another Great Satan with a real dark tan.
