This stuff never happens to me...

Quote:
An unwitting passenger arriving at Japan's Narita airport has received 142g of cannabis after a customs test went awry, officials say.

A customs officer hid a package of the banned substance in a side pocket of a randomly chosen suitcase in order to test airport security.

Sniffer dogs failed to detect the cannabis and the officer could not remember which bag he had put it in.

That about $700's worth of weed. Not bad for going through an airport.

Quote:
Anyone finding the package has been asked to contact customs officials.

Oh, the mindless optimism of custom officials...

Lol, I heard about this yesterday.

If you opened up your luggage upon returning home from an air-trip, found 1/4 of dope, what would you do with it?

Smoking it could be a pretty paranoid experience.

Do you think a Japanese officials 'stuff' would be any good?

True, though considering the effectiveness of Japan's sniffer dogs, he can probably save a little for the plane journey back.

I'd smell it, and if it smelled ok, I'd try it. Then I'd feast on sushi for two weeks.

Nam nam.

Depends who they nicked it from, really.

This actually happens a lot more than you might think.

The dogs have to be trained somehow, so they put drugs in the luggage of unsuspecting travellers.

Not everyday naturally and normally they always find it back. But ofcourse, nothing is failproof.

Having worked for Belgian customs for over ten years now, this isn't the largest joke/shock/surprise (chose the most appropriate) I've experienced/heard of.

Tell me, how reliable are custom sniffer dogs usually? If you have a small amount of cannabis in your pocket, will they smell it everytime? What about if it's heavily sprayed with deodorant, does that make any difference? What about hash Vs weed, any difference? What about if its locked away in your suitcase under smelly socks? Do these things affect the dog's ability?

Just, you know, for theoretical purposes...

My experiences with sniffer dogs has been that they usually are very good. A few years I was going to play football, and had smoked a couple of Js before leaving the house, but had nothing on me. In the tube station, they had a sniffer dog, and he "caught" me. I still smelled from earlier on, I guess. I was well impressed.

It's not easy to fool a sniffer dog, heck some of them even have a hit contract out on them by the maffia. Or so I was told anyway.

If they have a good trainer, then they are trained constantly and very effectively. There are ways to mask the scent, but I don't think there are many ways to mask the scent of something you carry on you.

No expert myself though, although I do know some of the people involved in training the dogs, I've never really asked them how to hide it for them.

Might be a good idea, it can always come in handy!

In my younger days, I used to have a little bit of cannabis on me everytime I took the Eurostar to paris, or on the way back, which was maybe once a month. You can trust on human custom to be fairly ineffective in finding small quantities, but dogs are something else...

A friend of mine got caught by a sniffer dog at the Paris end of the London-Paris journey. All he got was a fine, but still, using dogs a bit of an unfair hack. They are clearly imba.

And I would be the one traveler that would post on Alla that I got the bag in my luggage and then call the authorities to turn it in.
