My wife has had to be on the road for three week stretches (then home four weeks) for the last six months. It's been hard but our marriage hasn't really suffered, when she gets home things are great. Life was worse when I was working at a job I hated. I would think that doing a job you hate would be worse than four weeks away.

Your four weeks at home would give you time to look for a better job close to home. You can always try it for a while and quit after making enough money to get by on for a bit, unless they require a two year commitment or something.

I would definitely take a vacation before deciding.

There's a number of other programs that are continually looking for pilots in the local area if something like Angola didn't work out. They all do the same thing I'm doing now, just in different locations nearby. Given how much it costs to live in Kalifornia I can't see a huge influx of people moving out here from back east to claim these other open jobs.

I guess I'm not trying to convince myself here, but asking for your thoughts and experiences if you've had any that were similar. I've reached a point where I don't need much convincing. As Sammy said earlier, this has been an ongoing point of contention for some time now.

What I really really want is a flying job where I don't have to do anything but sit on the couch and eat Fritos, watch Jerry Springer, and scratch my a$$ all day earning the same as I do right now. Anybody know of a flying job out here in Kali like that?

It has long been established that long term night work can be hazardous to your mental health, but then you have been a regular poster here, so no big deal.

First thing I would do is take a vacation! See if that wont help your attitude.
Everything else is just up to you and Mrs. Totem as to the separation, savings, travel.

I would not take a job that had me living under guard, even dealing with locked wards as a social worker was taking its toll on me.

If you do take the job how long would you be committed to it? Im thinking just flying back and forth the same route day after day would be as boring/routine as your current job.
As far as being a tourist pilot go back and read Nobby's thread on tourists.

I agree that whatever major life change you plan to make, take that overdue vacation. Pretend that you are a liberal for a second and expand your options to more than just two. Put more effort in researching jobs outside of California where the quality of life may be more affordable.

For example, I took a job back east that pays about 10k less than the job offer I had in California. I own my own single family home and my commute is only about 45 minutes. If I had stayed in Cali, I was looking at a minimum 2 hour commute if I wanted the same kind of home.

All that and I get seasonal weather, too (for what it's worth).

Move to Maine, it's the way life should be. And I think our helicopter crashed a couple years ago (with the pilot), so we need another.

35 miles from Frederick to Rockville (both in Maryland). It helps that I leave the house after 9am. Smiley: grin

I270 or side roads? My dad work in Rockville, when I young and I remember taking both I270 and some back roads between there and Friendship Heights.

At least it better then having to take Rt 32 from Westminster to Columbia.

I have several friends who make the same commute from Frederick.

My dream is a small house near Gettysburg PA, if Jonwin ever becomes a tour guide there.

I270 - the back roads take longer, I've tried them all. It's not a bad commute and having Sirius satellite radio makes the drive pleasant.

I used to commute from Westminster to Columbia taking old 97 south to 70, then to 29 to Snowden River Pkwy a few years back.

My grandparents lived in Gettysburg and we spent many summers up there as kids. I still have some cousins up there and we still have our annual family reunion near Gettysburg in a small town called Biglerville.

Think of the deals she could get on uncut diamonds, though.

Just read an interesting article in the Smithsonian magazine where a company near your old stomping grounds in Bah-ston is making manufactured diamonds indistinguishable from the real thing, errrr, mined diamonds. He tells a story of a guy coming up behind him on his way to lunch saying, "A bullet would finish your diamond business pretty quick," or something to that effect. He figured it was someone from deBeers trying to scare him off.

The article talked about how lab made diamonds are on the cusp of starting a new technological revolution, both in electronics and in military applications. Pretty cool stuff.

Sadly plausible.

I'd hate to be the only person to tell you to go, Totem, and then find out you got killed in action.

Basically as long as the Mrs and you know and understand the timeline, and can deal why not try it out? They don't sign you up for a year or something, do they? I'm sure they've got to let people out if it just isn't working out (without egregious financial penalties).

Personally, I'd go with the stability and predictability of your current job. Sure it might be boring, but how boring would it be to not have wifey around, get HIV from an African *****, and not ever be able to bang said wifey again?

Hell, disregard everything I said before and go for it. You're never going to forgive yourself if you don't, at this rate.
