Just to clarify any misunderstanding, I used the word "yanqui" to insult all americans, and not just the in-bred hog-fUckers from south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Similarly, I assume the word "Brit" to imply bogotry and stupidity - I embrace both.

So RuPaul, a transsexual, grew up in San Diego, California and Atlanta Georgia. He found Atlanta more tolerant.
I'd be happy to insult San Diego if you think it'll help.

I think I have it covered.

Your dark argument would be stronger if Americans hadn't done exactly the same thing.

I've refrained from relating many of the questions I heard around Yellowstone and the Badlands by both foreign and domestic tourists.

In short - most people are freaking dumb.

I had to try to play nice this weekend, but I love how the woman sitting behind me into a guy for pushing a person's wheelchair, so he could walk behind them to get to a seat, Saturday night.

He was very lucky he as the person in said chair was responsible for making sure everyone who had "Special Needs" wasn't mistreated by staff members and I didn't want to have to ask that someone remove him from the room.

Next time I may press charges, as i learn something new, as he was painfully given a new *******.

Now to bed before I am yelled at.

The real problem is that people in general a idiots. It doesn't matter where they were born, all countries have their share. Anyone that has ever spent anytime at all in the service industry can attest to this.

Nothing against you personally Turin, but I always become annoyed whenever someone makes this trite generalization. It's a pet peeve.

People in general are not dumb. One is just more inclined to remember the single incident of a customer freaking out about not being able to return a product than the days or weeks of customers going out their business without incident.

If you've ever been angry or annoyed in public you have almost certainly been the basis for someone thinking "people are generally idiots," in her head. You're unlikely to think your own actions seem unjust or outrageous as well.

I would have used:

The moral of the story is - .....

But, I think that's the general line of thoughts I had. It doesn't matter what country you come from, there are always idiots. To make it even more clear the universe decided that the majority of these previously mentioned idiots also happen to be tourists.

Maybe it IS just perspective.

Overall I find american tourist to be polite and well behaved. They don't know a lot of geography and cant tell a large green hill from a brick star fort but then lots of non american visitors ask that question as well.

By the way Nobby, can you give directions to the LONDON BRIDGE, or has it fallen down again?

I won't say most people are dumb. Most people are within the average range of intelligence, obviously.

Many, many people are selfish and inconsiderate and take no thought regarding the impression their actions make.

#38REDACTED, Posted: May 27 2008 at 5:58 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I think most people think of Americans in their country as some National Lampoons family so ignorant it's comedy. I think the idea that so many people set out to see other cultures should base for something. I can see how you may deem it ignorant in some cases but in defense it can go both ways. I worked at a company once who sent a German fellow to the states to train us on some programs. He couldn't understand the directions to the bathroom in the building let alone a place to eat.

When we went we had already been studying London for a couple of months before we left so we knew exactly which tube stop to get off on and where to go from there. It wouldn't kill people to do a little research before they leave but I don't think most people take the time.

I don't disagree, but I'm also not sure that the generalization is actually so much a condemnation of people as it is one of a perceived state of the world. It's not so much that the individuals are stupid or foolish, but that the world as such is a very large place with a ton of other people, just like you, trying to get by, and they neither care about you nor enjoy your company. I always read it as more of a, "well what can you do? people are fools and we have to deal with it." Perhaps not fools for their intellect, but fools as a product of the way in which we live in general.

But that's just how I read it. I don't have any thoughts whatsoever about people, idiotic or not, until I've been introduced to them in some way.

This reminds me of a funny story from highschool, about which I still can't decide whether to laugh or cry. We had a school paper that was notorious for foolish comments and bad writing such as "[...]when Iraq bombed us on Sept. 11[...]" One day it ran a headline about Georgia's education system, and it read as so: "Nearly Half of All Georgia Students Score Below Average on Tests"

*sigh*
