On dying, dead, and dormant animals...Follow

#1 May 20 2008 at 3:02 AM Rating: Decent
As most of you know, Britain has an unhealthy obsession with pets and animals.

This was once again demonstrated on the front page of my newspaper, the Indy, which boldly proclaimed: "Abandoned! Are Britain's pets the latest victims of the credit crunch?":

Quote:
Britain's economic woes are forcing people to abandon animals in unprecedented numbers as desperate families struggle to cut costs by dumping their pets. Animal sanctuaries say they have been overwhelmed by the number of animals delivered to them in recent months as the credit crunch continues to bite and the cost of living rises sharply. They fear that the situation could become unmanageable if the downturn continues.

This, erm, tragedy, I guess, is apparently worthy of being front page news. The impending war between Georgia and Russia, the earthquake in China, the Burmese flooding, the whole civil war in Lebanon, nah, fUck this, some puppies might die!

Which doesn't matter anyway, since we can always revive them through DNA fragments! Grab your machetes, load up your sub-machine guns, or simply empty that extra lead in a nearby river, we can always make some more!

Quote:
In an echo of the film Jurassic Park, DNA from an extinct animal has been re-activated in the laboratory for the first time.

Scientists took genetic material from the Tasmanian tiger – officially declared extinct 70 years ago – and inserted it into mouse embryos where it played a role in developing cartilage and future bone.

Dr Andrew Pask, from the University of Melbourne in Australia, who led the research, said: "This is the first time that DNA from an extinct species has been used to induce a functional response in another living organism. As more and more species of animals become extinct, we are continuing to lose critical knowledge of gene function and their potential."

Finally, for those of you who prefer people to animals, here's an insightful little piece on what's going in Lebanon at the moment, by one of my favourite journalists ever, Robert Fisk.

Cloned pets do not have the same personality as the originals. Identical twin baseball players (who not only have identical genes but probably very similar upbringing) do not have identical skills on the field.

Yes, there are more significant things going on around the world. It's just news fatigue. Humans can't only read about the most significant things.

In America, lots of pets are being given up due to people not being able to afford the larger homes they bought. Unlike the civil war in Lebanon, adopting animals allows us to directly contribute to a solution.

Lastly, the newspaper business is going the way of the dodo. Even when I get offers for free newspaper delivery to my door, why on Earth would I want to allow people to toss their dead trees at me?

Expending so much effort trying to revive extinct species, whilst happily causing the species that are still here to become endangered or extinct, says a lot about the the human race.

Not sure what it says, but it does say something.

Robert Fisk. /Nod

And John Pilger. And Alex Cockburn. And Arthur Silber (not a journalist, more a blogger).

It's ok, we can revive them too in a few centuries!

Also Aztecs. We should revive Aztecs.

Hell Yeah!

Thicker chocolate than a Mars Bar, and slightly gooier middle. with raisins, if I recall correctly. One of Cadbury's greatest confections!

I knew a guy in college who was from Mexico but identified, ethnically, as Aztec. His last name was Aztec, in origin, and quite unusual. Apparently there are a million or so people living in central Mexico who still speak the (an?) Aztec language.

So much like the pygmy, still around.

I think it would be an, because there is most likely a lot of different dialects.

Also, sounds like some people really do value animals more than humans, and I for one think it is horrible that some people can place more value on dogs and cats than people.
