...that will outperform the dow jones industrial average (symbol: DJI) over the course of six months.
Rules:

(1) it has to have some common symbol which can be looked up on, say, cnn money, google finance, yahoo finance, etc.

(2) you have to post your item's stock symbol and today's opening number (so that we have a common baseline and it doesn't matter exactly what second you post).

(3) official end date: opening number, Nov 19.

For example, for the dow, symbol: DJI, 1295.41

At stake: not much (duh) bragging rights and some rate ups from me (likely worthless but...) for the person who beats the Dow by the greatest margin (percent increase).

Makes small projectors slated for cell phones, etc. Will either take off or tank in the next year depending on whom cell phone makers choose.

I'm still struggling to find a Burmese construction company that's quoted, so I'll plump for Halliburton at 49.07.

Of course, the two comments are entirely unrelated Smiley: cool

Suncor. This stock has already tripled on me since I bought it a couple years ago and I expect it to triple again over the next couple years. Oil sands FTW.

I'd obviously do due diligence before buying it, but let me ask offhand: How closely is it tied to the commodity price of crude?

It is very much tied to the price of crude. If oil prices plunge, Suncor's price will plunge as well. It is a volatile stock. The oil sands is the biggest raw source of crude oil outside Saudi Arabia. Suncor is the best of breed of oil sands companies. When I bought it, oil was about $30 a barrel and they claimed they needed to get to $40 in order to make a profit due to the higher cost of mining the oil sands. At $100 plus, the only question is how quickly they can expand their operations to increase their profits. I would wait until oil goes through another down cycle and their stock drops and buy it then. I've been buying pieces of it during its down cycles. But I personally think oil will continue to rise, which makes Suncor potentially the world's largest oil company in a few years.

There are also several other oil sands stocks that are good buys due to their dividends more than their potential price increases. They are taking advantage of a Canadian tax loophole that is going to disappear in a couple years, but for now pay dividends between 5 and 10%. Prime West and Penn West are the two I can think of off the top of my head.

I'll give you another stock pick if you are the gambling type. Penn National (Penn). It currently trades for $43 a share. It is scheduled to be sold to a private investment firm in June for $67 a share. If the sale goes through you will make a more than 50% profit in a just a month. If the sale doesn't go through, well it's a solid company, so it's not a totally worthless investment, but it is still likely to drop in value. I'd hang on to it through the first drop and it will likely come back up somewhat.

I've done as much research on this as I can. From what I can tell, the financing for the sale is solidly in place, the shareholders have approved the sale and most of the jurisdictions that have to approve the sales of casinos have already done so, with the last few not expected to be a problem. There is a huge penalty if the buyer backs out and every day after the target date they don't get the deal done the sales price goes up, as does the penalty for breaking the contract. The price is probably over valued in today's market, which is why Wall Street is staying away from it, but I think the penalty and financing will push it through.

So there's your gamble. Buy this casino gaming stock and a month from now you either get your money plus 50% more or end up with a stock worth perhaps 25% less, but still a decent company that could well rebound over the long term. If you buy it, just remember I said it is a pure gamble. I wouldn't put money into it I couldn't afford to lose or to tie up long term.

Own it at $45. I hold (or trade) probably too many gaming stocks because I'm in and around casinos so much that I'm more inclined to take the time to research them. Buy what you know, etc.

I recently sold Wynn at 150ish, and still hold MGM/Mirage, and have a short position in Boyd Gaming.

Oh, while we're here, I'm short Oil. Not that it's working out for me so far, but if it get below $119 in the next six months I'll do ok.

I pick CKSW (ClickSoftware Technologies) at 3.09. It's a risky bet but in terms of percentage gain it's good for this kind of competition. They mostly provide software for managing businesses.

And Yossarian, betting against the Russell 3000 might be better for a contest since it comprises more stocks. But it's your rules, not mine.

Well, I guess you get some bragging rights if you beat the Dow, but the rate-ups go to the one who beats it by the most, which by definition would mean one also beat the Russell, NASDAQ, etc. by the most. So it doesn't really matter - and thus I picked the most "famous" one.

It's the Canadian exchange. I think it currently trades moose antlers and hockey pucks almost exclusively.
