I'll be honest, have no idea what rocks and what doesn't. I hear people yelling about nerfing rangers already, and that the Priest of Mitra and the Demonologist are kicking ***. Most people are playing assassins and conquerors according to a poll.

I'm playing a carebear server for now, might pick up pvp later. I got bored with WoW pvp and was more interested in the game than the gank.

The biggest thing is to make sure your rig can handle it, it's pretty tough on the comp.

If you can handle EQ2 or Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, you can easily handle Age of Conan (assuming if you ever played Vanguard).

new rig is 512 8800gt, 3gb ram, quad core etc. Not worried bout the graphics I just want to find something that I can pair with my brother who is dead set on rolling Assassin, so we can go out and melt face.

Since it looks like I am installing it tomorrow.

Glad to hear it, Bhodi - be prepared for a long install - but well worth it. My toons are on Thog, but I've been trying so many classes that my highest toon is only 14 now. Neph mentioned he and his brother are on Wiccana, so I'll roll a toon there.

All healing classes are somewhat "hybrids" apparently. I haven't tried any healers yet, but my guildies rave about Priest of Mithra. Tempest of Set has some cool and pwerful AoE spells, and is kind of a dps/healing hybrid, so it could be fun. Not sure about the bear Shaman.

Couple guys from the hometown, WoW etc are rolling AoC on the side. Looking for a pvp server cause PVE always seems to lack the competitive edge.

I am still raiding in World of Warcraft with my pimped out tier 6 Holy Paladin and since I don't want to turn paler than a morlock with summer coming up kind of looking for something I can just **** around without needing the time commitment that leaves me sitting inside when there are hot girls outside and I am within walking distance of 6 bars.

#84REDACTED, Posted: May 25 2008 at 7:12 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) the melee classes work just fine IMO. the fighting mechanics are better than most games out, mainly because the fights are shorter, and dont make you feel like your sawing on wood with a hand saw like EQ2 and EQ1. i like the 3 differant angles of attack thng and while the results of the combos look cool, i have only seen 3 graphics. a sword sweep, a whirling sword attack and a knock down. i enjoy the melee classes.

Hit 20 last night, loving it more and more every time I log on. The areas and the mobs are superb, the spells are fun. Don't get me wrong, there is a ton of work ot be done, but I am really enjoying it. Hoping to get off newbie island today and then the game is really going to open up.

I will warn you though, everything is instanced right now. So if you don't like that type of game, you might be a bit turned off. I think it works well as I can't imagine the entire server population all trying to do these quests at once.

Joined a guild on Thog with Forumopolis msg board regulars. They recommended (as do I) a UI you can download on Curse.com - just head to the AoC portal on Curse and download the MirageUI. I am using it and it's decent - I'm sure better ones will become available later.

It's not set up for their automatic download client, so you have to do it manually at least the first time out. Be sure to read the ReadMe file (quoted below) because if you ***** it up, you may be in for some re-patching.

MIRAGE UI FOR AGE OF CONAN
Version 1.2, May 23st, 2008
Created and maintained by Eduardo "LedMirage" Lucero
=================================================

Thank you for downloading the Mirage UI for Age of Conan, this modification to the game adds two fixed shortcut bars with 17 key bindable buttons each above the main shortcut bar
without removing any functionality whatsoever to the existing default user interface.

The two extra bars are mirror images and extensions of the two additional hotbars the game supports (the two vertical invisible bars by default), you can bind every single new button by going to OPTIONS > CONTROLS and binding the following shortcuts:

Mirage UI Shortcut Bar #1 (17 Buttons)
The first 7 buttons correspond to "1st Extended Action Button" numbers 11 through 17
The last 10 buttons correspond to "1st Extended Action Button" numbers 1 through 10 and they line up perfectly with the default shortcut bar

Mirage UI Shortcut Bar #2 (17 Buttons)
The first 7 buttons correspond to "2nd Extended Action Button" numbers 11 through 17
The last 10 buttons correspond to "2nd Extended Action Button" numbers 1 through 10 and they line up perfectly with the default shortcut bar

The Combat Rose and interactive icons have been repositioned vertically as to not overlap the new shortcut bars.

The Mini Pet Control Bar and the Sould Fragment tracker have been both repositioned to the center of the screen and right above the Mirage UI shortcut bar #2 (just below the combat rose).

The Group Panel has been revamped also to a bigger version with new graphics.

Enjoy!

LATEST CHANGES
=================================================
Version 1.2, 5/23/2008

New Group Window! Remade the group panel in a whole new layout and made all new custom graphics for it, you can also see both buffs and debuffs on all party members now. If you don't want to use this simply browse to your ..\cd_image\Gui\Customized\Views\TeamGUI\ folder and delete the two files found in there: TeamListView.xml and TeamListEntryView.xml

Modified the Player and Target frames to display both Buffs and Debuffs now.

Repositioned the Target of Target health bar centered above the Target frame, this resolves the graphic side shift issue on the Mirage UI Small version.

Modified the BottomBar to prevent it from getting distorted when certain classes hit level 40 and obtain Lower Right and Lower Left attacks. Level 40 and above players please submit feedback!

The additional floating shortcut bar #1 can now be used, be adviced that even though the shortcut bindings may appear on it, they actually apply to the MUI Shortcut Bar, this is a work in progress and you can simply turn it off if you don't need it.

Graphics to replace the minimap and resurrection icons on the minimap are included but currently can not be modified due to a bug, nevertheless they are there for when this is fixed.
Version 1.1, 5/21/2008

By popular demand I creatded a new alternate smaller scale version of the mod, this is a 3/4 scale version (75%) smaller set of shortcut bars that keep the full functionality of the game! See the extra installation notes to set it up.

New Player and Target Health, Stamina and Mana bars graphics, this is a minor cosmetic tweak

Changed the Player and Target names to use the in-game Hyborian font. Nods go to Werik for he was the first to make the use of the in-game font in his mod.

Fixed the default position of the Player and target timer bars. BTW they can be moved if you enable them under INTERFACE OPTIONS > ADVACED > SHOW TIMER BARS.
=================================================
INSTALLATION
=================================================

Mirage UI Installation:

1. Exit the game.

2. Find the folder named "Customized" found under ..\Age of Conan\cd_image\Gui\Customized\ once there delete only the contents found inside of the Customized folder. Do NOT delete any other folders otherwise you may have to deal with a 911MB download! This is done in order to prevent potential conflicts with other user modified content and compiled xml files (*.bxml)

3. Extract all the files from the Mirage UI Zip file to your root folder for the game, for example "C:\Program Files\Funcom\Age of Conan\", make sure to use the folder names options with winzip to create the necessary folder paths when you extract the files. Again, extract all the files in the zip file to your main Age of Conan game folder and do not worry about getting prompted to overwrite files in the DEFAULT directory these are custom Mirage UI graphic files and they do not overwrite any base game files (hence they're named mui_*.tga)

To install the smaller scale version of the mod skip to step #6

4. Launch the game

5. Enjoy!

Mirage UI Small Scale Bars Installation:
6. Find the folder named "Customized" found in ..\Age of Conan\cd_image\Gui\Customized\ and delete this folder. Use caution here and only delete the folder named "Customized" nothing else!.

7. Find the folder named "MirageUI_SMALL_Rename_this_to_Customized" found in ..\Age of Conan\cd_image\Gui\MirageUI_SMALL_Rename_this_to_Customized\

8. Rename the folder named "MirageUI_SMALL_Rename_this_to_Customized" to "Customized" so you will end up with the following folder path: ..\Age of Conan\cd_image\Gui\Customized\

9. Launch the game and enjoy!

=================================================
Known Issues and workarounds
=================================================
If you have any problems not listed below it is highly recommended that do a clean installation of the Mirage UI as indicated in the Installation section, if this does not resolve your issue please let us know in the forums at ledmirage.net/

If you don't see health, stamina and mana bars but instead a non-colored background only and are missing the all of the images for the shortcut backgrounds then most likely you didn't extract all the graphics from the zip file to the correct location, open up the zip file and look at their paths, that's where they should be in your game folder - they go in the ..\cd_image\Gui\Default\gfx\bottombars\ and ..\cd_image\Gui\Default\gfx\PortraitGUI\portraitsbottom\ do not worry they do not overwrite any base game files (hence they're named mui_*.tga)

There are duplicates of both of your default floating shortcut bars, this is normal as the Mirage UI uses the buttons in those two bars to create the new custom UI's, you can disable the two additional shortcutbars under OPTIONS > INTERFACE OPTIONS > HUD
Installed it last night.

Installation was a pain. Not the size of the patch, that 623mb download took less than 30 min. The thing is just wonky with Vista and I had to turn off Firewall, AV and run under administrator in order to ensure the DL didn't freeze, and even after the patch I still have to do that.

Character creation: 3 races, 12 classes, every little piece can be tweaked. Very solid creation set up. On par with EQII or CoH.

Graphics: I was worried cause the youtube vids and even the trailers on the sites kind of looked like ***. That is not the case at all, you have a game here that makes EQII look old and busted. The character animations are crazy good, environments are sparkling and frankly I was very very impressed with it.

Tits, Blood and Gore You start off bludgeoning people with a broken oar, and when you get that killing blow the blood erupts. Bewbs are there in all their glory. The quests start off tame enough but before long you are calling a slave trader a ***** son, and beating the hell out of dead beat pirates to collect money for the proprietress of the Bearded Clam, the local ***** house. Smiley: lol

Quests Dialog driven, with a Knights of the Old Republic "choose what you say". Ranging from basic kill x monster, gather x item to more fun missions such as stealthing past guards running on roof tops and evesdropping on a conversation.

Combat
: Very different take. Basically you can swing left, right, straight on. Your opponent has a hud around them showing which way their defenses are focused so you can shift attacks to do more damage. Keeps you on your toes. Special abilities used in conjuction with specific directional attacks will perform moves. You can also double tap your movement to dodge sideways backward etc, as well as a block button.

Starting off : You start on an isle and will for all intents and purposes the first 20 levels are like playing a solo player game. Though there are very notable exceptions to this and it really doesn't cover the entirety of it. There is a main quest chain that actually differs for each class that gives you pieces of the overall story of what is going on, which is pretty bob damned neat.

Overall really really enjoying it. Played a Bear shaman to lvl 9, found it got weak. Rolled a ranger and it wasn't bad. Then I cheesed out and tried a Barbarian if only to be like every other single person who picked up the game only to find out the class is flat out nails to play.

Bear Shaman is ridiculously difficult to lvl pre-15. Glad you are enjoying it, I think it's great. It really got good at 15 or so, the zones and the mobs are what makes the world come alive. That and bewbs.

My Barbarian is at 16 now - having a blast with him. They aren't as common on my PvE server, but I understand they are pretty popular on PvP servers.

Assassin's are amazing so you may want to check one out, at least for their special moves. Like Neph said, Shamans have it tough pre-15, but they do get better.

Along with my 16 Barbarian (who I'm focusing on until he hits 80), I've got a 14 Assassin, 11 Ranger, 9 Priest of Mitra, 10 Guardian, and 6 Demonologist. I'll try some of the other classes like Dark Templar, Tempest of Set, Necromancer, Shaman, and Conquerer later.

First though, gonna work to get Snorre the Barbarian off Tortage island and get him to the mainland today. Then, I'll explore the world and get to 40 so I can utilize my free Mammoth mount. Smiley: grin

Welp, since everyone else is doing it, I may as well. I picked up the game last week and have played around with several classes. I wont get into graphics etc. Everyone else has allready covered that (and ************ that can't spel has got it all wrong, yet again). I played a Conqueror to 13 and really enjoyed him, but as 9 out of 10 toons are melee I decided to concentrate on the Demonologist. Let me tell you Demonologists are a pain in the *** to play 'til you get to level 15. Then you get an AoE spell and you can start to tank more than two Mobs at a time. After that the going is much easier. I just hit 20 this morning but have not started the end quest to get off the island. I also played around with an Assasin, but she is so squishy. Maybe I need to play her a little longer. My two tin.

You know I don't even think it is the bear shaman class that is hard 8-15, it is the complete lack of weapons for the class. The bear shaman saw 1 weapon upgrade in 9 levels, the Barbarian saw about 5.

I got my conqueror up to 27 this week-end, and he was a blast to play. Good damage, lots of knockbacks and stuns, and some nice party buffs. He's got all the subtlety of a drunken viking.

Once you reach level 20, the game really opens up and you can actually choose where you want to quest, start picking up a gathering profession, and see a big city. All good. The levelling is surprisingly quick, at least on a PvE server.

I, also, can't wait for 40 and the rhino mount Smiley: grin

Just to add, I'm loving the lack of time-sinks so far. Travelling is instant, there's no need to skill up new weapons, hs is 30 mins... It seems they deliberately took out lots of the boring bits of other mmos. You log on, kill stuff, complete your quest, bish bash bosh.

Shadowrelm is right in one respect though, there are no dwarves.

So how solo-able is AoC? In WoW, you can basically solo to the level cap. In Eq 1.0, most classes needed to be in a group at/before level 20 - and preferably a good.

Since it seems most of you are soloing to 20, and they've included PvP, it seems likely it is more like WoW.

My impression is that Eq 2.0 is pretty close to WoW on this scale and it is likely any new entry in the MMO market needs to be somewhere around Eq 2.0 or WoW in soloability.

My 2 cents

Given time zones, I get few opportunities to group in LoTRO, and got to lvl 50 OK. Nice balance IMHO

You're meant to be able to solo your way to 80. On a PvE server, it certainly seems possible. Some quests require a group, but there's plenty of people around. Only downside I've seen so far is that respawn times are a tiny bit long, but it's nothing awful.

I just find the game always keeps you doing something so it goes by fast. The first thing that hit me when I came out of the "Night Mode" which is basically single player where you move the main quest/story line forward, is that there are A LOT of quests.

I mean 20-30+, and each time you knock one out it opens another. Of course a lot of those send me out into PvP zones which can be dangerous. Lots of ganking and such. PvE would be a dream.

Anything can solo, but as in most games some are better than others.

It's cool to look on the quest log for each kit and see how many quests are in the "chain". I will warn you though, the first time through most of the quests had me running back and forth to the same palces multiple times. The second time through has been a ton quicker.

And bear shaman isn't impossible to level, but compared to the other classes, it is really tough. It doesn't get too much better at 15, although you can survive much longer.
