I have a question or 3....

The Democratic nomination race apears to have been smothered under a torrent of irrelevant argument about race and religion, aided by a press, both Left and Right, who are to 'journalistic integrity', what gbaji is to brevity.

On one hand you have Hillary, whose qualifications are that she has shagged an ex-president, and on the other you have Obama who is being trashed because a) he's a bit black, b)his name rhymes with Osama and c)of what his preacher says. The choice between the two (a black man and a white woman) seems to be splitting the dems in a way that the Pubbies can only have hoped for in their most optimistic dreams...

Unless their is a major turnaround in the campaign strategies, again with the help of the media, come election time theirs going to be a very split Democratic party who, left with the taste of a very bitter divisive primaries campaign, are perhaps going to feck it all up, and allow McCain to win.

So my questions are.....

1. If McCain keels over and dies before or just after the election, what happens? Does his running mate become the candidate/president?

2. Who is McCains running mate going to be? And how is that going to affect the direction that the US takes post Bush? Especially if McCain does kark it.

3. I know that the president is limited in how many times he is allowed to run. What about the VP? Cheney has already pretty much claimed to be above the law when it comes to matters of oversight and wotnot. Its fairly obvious that he's been a prime-mover in Bush's term, if not completely in charge, if he decides to 'keep' his position, due to say....an *event*, such as another 'major terrorist attack' leading to a national emergency, would he get away with it??

4. Is all of that, needlessly worrying about nothing? Ron Paul is going to win after all.

Ron Paul came out and said he prefers Obama to McCain.

1) If it happens after the Republican National Convention then I'd assume his running mate would be the new frontrunner. Dunno the rules on that.
2) After he is picked at the RNC he will pick his running mate as well as lay out plans for who he plans on appointing to various positions.
3) VP can't do **** after the president he ran with goes out, except run himself. No one in their right mind would vote for Cheney. If he went and declared himself dictator for life you better bet everything you have on riots being held across the country.
4) Actually according to the 8 ball it's Nader's turn

(1A) If McCain were to die relatively immediately prior to the election, I would assume the RNC would place the VP candidate on the ballot for President simply due to name recognition. However, I don't think anything would legally prevent them from putting anyone else who was Constitutionally qualified on the ballot instead. The biggest issue would be getting new ballots, etc prepared.

(1B) If McCain were to die between the general election and the convening of the electoral college, the RNC would place tremendous pressure on the Republican members of the EC to vote for the VP. If the VP failed to get 270 votes (because some of the Republican members refused to vote for him) and the Democratic nominee fails to get 270 votes, then the mess goes to the House of Representatives for a vote as per the 12th Amendement.

(1C) By my reading of it, if McCain makes it past the EC process but then shuffles off his mortal coil before actually taking office, his VP becomes the President on Jan 20th as per the 20th Amendment: "If, at the time fixed for the beginning of the term of the President, the President elect shall have died, the Vice President elect shall become President."

(2) No clue. I assume it'll be some governor or other state-level politican who will make most of us say "Who?". I doubt it will be Romney or Huckabee.

(3) You can be Vice-President for as many times as you're elected to Vice-President. That said, you need to be elected to the position and Cheney can't just refuse to give up the post.

(4) Probably.

Don't really care about your questions (and Joph answered them all anyway), but I'll take the opportunity to reiterate that IMO, the Dems are already hosed and have been for months. Obama can't win, and if Clinton gets the nod, it'll split the party over racial lines, and she can't win.

Just sayin'
