Girl carries secret baby to hospital, still attached

Now granted, when I read the title, I pictured her walking down the street pulling the bloody fetus behind her by the umbilical cord. And while this is not the case, the story still runs the gamut of being sick/funny/creepy all at the same time.

Quote:
LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- A 17-year-old girl gave birth secretly at home, then walked four blocks to a hospital with the baby still attached by its umbilical cord.

"I was just a little nervous" when the labor began, Xochitl Parra said Friday from St. Mary Medical Center as she cradled her 8-pound, 3-ounce son, Alejandro.

The boy was normal and "eating like a champ," said Dr. Jose Perez, director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The teenager said she was alone and taking a shower around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to get ready for school. Then the contractions took over.

"I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out," she said.

Parra did not call 911 because the home phone was disconnected, and she did not want to wake the neighbors because it was so early. Instead, she wrapped the baby, got dressed and went to the hospital on foot.

"I started walking and jogging to the hospital," she said.

The teen came into the hospital lobby and asked for help, Perez said.

"She still had the placenta and the baby was still attached, so of course everyone said, 'Don't move!' " he said.

Perez praised the girl for taking quick action.

"They could have bled to death; thank God that didn't happen," the doctor said. "She was very clever. She knew what to do. She wrapped the baby up and walked over here."

Parra, a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High, said she kept her pregnancy a secret because she was afraid her mother would "kick me out of the house." Her mother has now accepted the situation and is going to help the teen care for the baby so she can continue attending school, Parra said.

Perez called the outcome "heartwarming."

"We hear so much negative with teenagers throwing their babies in the Dumpsters," he said. "This baby is fine, and hopefully there will be a happy ending with the extended family."

Well the good news is she didn't try to flush the poor baby. Bad news is it's another teenage mother.

I find it sad that a MD is calling this girl "clever" and is actually quoted as saying "She knew what to do".

It's terrible that she couldn't tell her mother because she was afraid she'd be kicked out the house.

"Mom I'm pregnant with your grandchild"

"****! GTFO"

Yeah -_- You'd think adverse reactions from parents would be the biggest deterrent for pregnancy ever, but all this stupid abstinence-only sh*t never goes into the "Well if your non-existant method of birth control fails, the first thing you should do is GO TO THE DOCTOR/TELL YOUR PARENTS/GET COUNSELING."

So these teenagers don't know what kind of reaction to expect from their parents, and so they panic and keep it a secret and end up endangering the lives of themselves and their children. UGH!

Not saying it's right, but I know several more traditional catholic Hispanic families here who would react the same.

And for that I blame the Catholic church. (S'why I left, actually.)

I'm just curious how she kept an 8 pound 3 ounce baby inside her "secret". Did her mom just not notice the bulging belly? That's a pretty average sized baby. I'd expect to see some bulge or something...

It depends on how high she was carrying. A friend of mine's sister had a kidney stone that turned out to be a baby, and she had NO CLUE she was pregant . . . she gained a whole ten pounds and one jean size during the pregnancy, and thought she was just getting older/fatter from her lithesome teenage years (i.e. freshman fifteen.) She had normal periods the whole time, and didn't even feel anything at all until she had a terrible pain in her pelvis that she was almost certain was kidney stones.

Nope, it was a baby boy. x_x

That kid is SO GODDAMN LUCKY he didn't end up with fetal alcohol syndrome.

I guess with the whole abstinence only thing, they assume that people have the few brain cells required to understand"Hey something is wrong, I ought to tell someone".

I am curios though, ok so these people are taught abstinence only. So if that is the one way they know will not result in children, why do they go ahead and F#ck anyway?

I'm sure her parents knew it was coming, she was probably just home alone when it happened.
