Didn't you hear the locals interviewed? The older ones spoke German, but the younger adults and teenagers all spoke fluent American English. 80% of mainland European prime-time TV is 6-month-old US crud.
I imagine those kids can quote every one of Joey Tribiani and Chandler Bing's one-liners in an authentic US accent.
A downside is that on the ride from the dungeon to the cop station, they'd be traumatised by the absence of Yellow Cabs, NYPD cars and IHoP.
