In order to take full advantage of GTA IV graphics on the Xbox 360 I will need to buy the following:

1.) XBox 360 Black - $450.00
2.) GTA IV - $59.95
3.) Decent 1080dpi flatscreen TV $1677.40

Don't think the wifey is going to go for that....

P.S prices are not exact but you get the idea.

Conversely, $900 buys a lot of LSD.

You don't need a 1080p or 1080i to get a fantastic HD picture. Get a 720p LCD or plasma TV unless you really feel the need to splurge on the latest and greatest. A quick google search found a 42" plasma 720p TV for as low as $900 ($650 refurbished).

there is a HUGE difference in quality between 720p and 1080p. also plasma is the **** as they burn out faster then LCD and are not worth the upfront cost.

for your $900 720p plasma you mention, you can buy the 37 1080p LCD i linked. sure ya lose a few inches, but you will have a better overall TV that will last longer and provide a better picture.

I use my 27 inch Konka flat screen (as in flat tube) that I bought 3 years ago for $279.00 CAN. That means I have 25 cases of beer to get over my sadness of not getting a Plasma or an LCD.

I disagree. I did extensive research before buying my new TV 2 months ago and a lot of what you are saying is BS. I've looked at 720p and 1080p tv's side by side, and for most things you would use it for you can't tell the difference between the two. Granted, some of the new games are supposed to be able to take advantage of the full capability of a 1080 unit, but in the end is it worth the additional cost? The xbox 360 games I play on my 50" Panasonic 720p look fantastic. I have zero complaints.

Plasma "burn" is pretty much a thing of the past. With the pixel shifting technology that they have in the new models you don't get any more burn than you would on a CRT TV back in the day. Meaning if you leave it on for a hella long time with the same display, it'll burn in. It'll also most likely fade after you turn it off for a while. Also, the old rumor with Plasmas is they would fail quicker than the LCD TVs, but most plasmas today are tested to last 40k hours, which isn't much different than LCD. Which works out to (iirc) almost 10 years of watching the TV 8.5 hours a day. So you would have to put some serious time in to burn one out. And with technology the way it is, who will have the same TV for 10 years anyways? By then a TV will be as thin as posterboard and you'll just stick it on the wall.

Also, LCD are more prone to stuttering displays with fast action (such as sports or video games) where Plasma can handle the fast action much more efficiently.

Regardless, I'm pretty happy with my TV. Granted, I've had it 2 months, but if it lasts me 5 years I'll consider it money well spent. Also, it was only $1450.00.

The plasma I bought is listed as having a brightness life of around 27000 hours. Not too worried about it.

I'm still waiting for them to come out with a game(that I want to play) that will push my TV up to its 1080i capability.

The damned 360 will only play 360 games at 720p, regular DVD's at 480p, and only some of my HD-DVD's at it's 1080i on my HD-DVD drive.

You have to stare hard to notice the difference in between 720p and 1080p, but you will notice it.

i can see a HUGE difference in HD programing with Plasma v LCD of 720 v 1080 respectively. the color of the plasma is ALWAYS better from the ones i have looked at, but when you put 720p next to 1080p and watch lets say NFL in HD, yes you can see a major difference, or at least i can.

Of course. But you're comparing an HD source on an HD TV. For the other 95% of programming out there, including all those DVDs you have sitting around (unless you've already converted your entire library to Blu-ray), you're actually getting lower quality video on that 1080 set then the 720.

That's because DVDs are set to 720. A lot more video games are set to display in 720 then 1080. Obviously, normal broadcast TV isn't set to either 1080 or 720, but there's less artifacting involved in "stepping down" from 720 to 480, then from 1080 to 480. And honestly, who cares about the quality for regular broadcast TV? ;)

IMO, it's ultimately about cost versus need. Unless you've got a library full of blu-ray disks and *don't* have a library full of DVDs, you're going to be better off with a 720 set. If cost is at all a factor that is...

I bet you and I have the same TV, and yes beer helps out with the picture quite a bit.

Yeah, but you have to pay extra for those.

yes it is about cost. for $900 you can buy the BETTER TV and only lose 4.5in of display area. as 90% of the TV that i watch is in HD, and in a year or so most FTA TV in America will be pure digital, thus converting to HD broadcasting it is STUPID to NOT buy the HD vs of the TV for as cheap as you can get them now.
