Echoing Smash, the message seemed to be "The reason why people become single issue voters on tpoics such as gun control, immigration, etc is because they don't have faith that either party will help them in issues like the economy". Which I largely agree with. It's not to say that there's anything wrong with being concerned with gun rights or immigration or religion, etc but if you're concerned with them near-exclusively, there's probably a reason why you're more worried about gun rights than who's going to help bring jobs into your state.

However, he said it pretty poorly and should come with a straight apology now and save the nuanced apology for the debates.

I honestly think thats the kind of apology you give when you are sorry you got caught saying something, not that you actually said it. If he honestly feels that way (and I believe he does) he shouldn't have to apologize for his opinion.

What I don't get is how this comment makes him elitist.

Unless . . . that's maybe because I'm an elitist too.

D:

Oh god, now that I think about it, I AM. I'm college educated, I'm going to be marrying a doctor, whose brother in law is also a doctor, both my parents had their college degrees as well, as do two out of three of my sisters, one of them a masters going on PhD. I work in the IT industry. I own multiple computers and opted for high speed internet over cable television. I refuse to hold online conversations with people who do not make a minimal attempt at spelling and grammar.

So, never mind that I only make $25,000 a year, because I have health insurance and own a car, I'm still an elitist. Because I sometimes prefer OJ to coffee, I'm an elitist. Because I play chess better than bowling, I'm an elitist. Because I actually focus on issues about the economy, and not gun control or abortion rights, I'm an elitist.

Is there anything I can do? Smiley: cry

By saying that other people cling to guns, religion, and racism, he's implying that they are too ignorant or stubborn to actually do anything about the problem. Obama's the problem solver, the one who's going to bring all this change, remember? Simply having an opinion that one thing is better than another does not make one an elitist, but accusing a whole group of people of not being capable of rationality with no facts cited is not a good way to get one's point across.

No, the pundits are implying that.

Obamas statement however "elitist" it sounds, is a truth. Ive lived in small towns in both IN and PA, his remarks are on target. Prolly the most honest politician in decades, he doesnt pander to people.

Hopefully that doesn't hurt him some people need pandering. Unfortunately a lot of people in this country cant see past a certain issue and in order to win one must pander. It really is a shame.

And that was his point. People tend to be one-issue voters because they don't believe government can take action on the other ones.

hmmmm a Democrat disdaining the average worker who have conviction in their beliefs and the rights numerated in the US constitution; who'd have thunk it. Don't they know it's the governments responsibility to ensure their happiness?

How could someone so educated make so little? Or was this you're little "look at me i'm moving out of the trailer" post? Fitting that you would include you're husband in your list of achievments. I'm curious if your parents "had their college degrees" where did they go? I can certainly understand not wishing to converse with someone with poor grammar.

Read for comprehension, Varrus. Most likely, Catwho is saying that his/her parents have passed from this vale of tears. Hence the past tense.

So why is it again the middle-low class suburbian votes mostly GOP when it undermines them economically usually in favor of big business?

Because they fucking feel like it for absolutely no reason? They vote GOP because they feel the GOP won't try to take their guns, or somehow be able to stick the ten commandments in their schools, offices, and courts.

Get with the fucking program.

Maybe it's just me but i thought the point he was making was that Govenment had f*cked over these people for years so it's no wonder they are bitter about it and voted on things they knew and trusted

Guns, religion and racism.

Wow! Someone's sarcasm meter was missing today.

For the record, I was orphaned by 24.

Father: Disabled America Veteran, went to school on the GI Bill, died of heart disease in 2002 in Eisenhower Army Medical Center, where he had worked as a civil servent for the Army for 20 years after retiring. Avoided 'Nam by getting drafted to the Special Forces, where he worked as a dental assistant ensuring that every soldier who went off to die had perfect teeth.

Mother: Killed by a paranoid schizophrenic in 2004 who had been released from jail only the year before, who didn't have any means to afford his $1000 medication and who decided she was a ripe target. He's rotting in jail for 150 years now, but this senseless death could have been prevented with UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. She also attended school on the GI Bill.

They both went to Eastern Montana College, in their late thirties, to fulfill their lifelong dream of a college degree. I was a late surprise for my mom at 39, and thus was the only one of my sisters that was born after my parents had their degrees.

So yes, my parents are dead. Past tense. I fulfilled my father's dream for me of going to the University of Georgia, which was always his favorite team, one semester after he passed away.
