I have a friend, well acquaintence, that works for a local research org. They've been contracted to do a study to determine how best to address the problem of domestic abuse on men.

She's been lamenting the inability to get data. Appartently two fairly large surveys have been unable to find enough men willing to 'admit' to being beat in order to meet statistical significance.

I suggested that perhaps the reason they couldn't get men to come forward and admit to being beaten, was that maybe there just weren't that many men in this country that felt as if they were being physically abused by their domestic partner (in fact this particular study was attempting to NOT address men in gay relationships). ??

Asylum illuminate the shadowy-secret unknows of human behavior.

Beaten Man Syndrome Survey
I am female. I have never beaten a male domestic partner:11 (22.9%)
I am female. I have beaten a male domestic partner:1 (2.1%)
I am a male. I've been beaten by a domestic partner:8 (16.7%)
I am a male. I've never been beaten by a domestic partner:26 (54.2%)
None of the above:1 (2.1%)
Other - please explain..if ya want.:1 (2.1%)
Total:48

*Assume the term 'beat' to mean 'suffered from some sort of physical assault'.

orrrrrr an even more believable theory would be that men who are abused by a petite, fragile, gentle female would never come out of the woodworks to admit it.

Depends on the definition of "beat" I think. I've been in relationships where a woman punched me in the face, but I wouldn't characterize it as being "beaten" where I could have done something to stop it. Probably and go to jail, but you know, it's not like I couldn't have taken her.

I've heard of but never actually witnessed violent domestic beatings by (usually psychotic, or Irish) women.

My grandmother was apparently such a harridan. She threw things - cast iron skillets, whatever came to hand. Apparently everyone just fled until she calmed herself down.

My father tells me my grandmother would wake up them in the middle of the night and hit them with brooms having silently worked up self up into a frenzy about something and being unable to sleep.

Of course she'd confess to it later in the week, so it was all good.

The reason she can't get data is because men don't classify abuse the way women do.

Man hits a woman, woman screams abuse.
Woman hits a man, man says "WTF did I do?", the word abuse doesn't even come to mind.

So a lot of men have been hit, but if you asked them if they've ever been abused they'll say no, because they don't qualify that as abuse.

There needs to be a distinction drawn between being hit and abused. Abuse is largely a power game, people hit other people for lots of reasons, not always to control them somehow.

Tell that to a woman who's been hit by a man. There's a very large double standard when it comes to spousal violence, so much so that men don't consider a lot of things that happen to them to be abuse when it actually is.

To be fair to the lady's a 120lb waif is significantly less likely to cause any damage than a 250lb redneck.

What if the woman is 160lbs and the man is 170lbs? You can do a lot of damage to someone at any weight if the other person doesn't fight back, which in the case of a woman hitting a man is quite likely.

How so? He is taking it, he's just not going to report it. If anything it makes him tougher that he can take the punishment without hitting the woman back. Stupid maybe, but not a pussy.

The problem is when the OP's friend hands this guy a survey asking if he's been abused he's going to mark off no. So now we have surveys saying women are abused all the time and men are never abused, which just isn't the case.

He hasn't been. If he were a pussy and ran off and cried about it, then he'd have been abused.

Well, i've not seen the specifics but we had a pretty lenghty conversation. When they were able to get a willing survey participant, they weren't simply asking them if they were abused, but using all the survey tools at their disposal to try and get an their questioned answered.

I guess that's my question too. Is it a problem. A man gets pushed around, even hit, by a women whom he knows he could restrain if he had to. Is it abuse?

...and is it wrong, or indicative of an ill-functioning society?

If you look at statistics of men being killed by women whom they are in or were in a relationship with, you'll see that it's a pretty uncommon occurance. It does happen though.

No. This is an asinine question, and not what "abuse" is about. It's wanting to equivocate gender roles for the sake of equivocating gender roles. Men being physically abused by women are minuscule minority. Men are far more likely to be abused by women manipulating their insecurities to force them to things they otherwise wouldn't.

Exactly, and there's where the real double standard lies. A woman endlessly assaulting a man because he doesn't do the laundry is lovable sit com heroine, a man who slaps a woman because she doesn't is a criminal.

I should make it clear that this point that people are poor judges of sarcasm it would seem
