When you're poor the five/ten/fifteen second rule always applies.

Not this week.

I did drop a substantial amount of salad on the carpet this week. Normally I believe in the 5 second rule for myself, but decided i didn't want to wade through that much carpet fluff.

When I worked in a restaurant, if something was quickly scooped off of the floor that had accidently dropped, we'd declare "It fell on a napkin". That made it all ok.

I'm still reeling from my shoe and office floor being desecrated by dog-poo last week, and so, I'm likely to chuck anything edible that hits the floor.

I only heard about this a month ago or so. Any idea what the logic behind it is? It takes bacterias seconds to climb aboard a bit of food?

yeah it pretty much follows the false idea that things that have fallen to the floor are not immediately contaminated. Variations include the 3 second rule, 7 second rule, or 10 second rule.

actually the mexican bacteria can jump on pretty fast. They have the need to get to a better place and will run, jump, hop, climb on anything as fast as they can. It's the American bacteria that are too lazy to jump on. Or maybe the french, as they disdain anything that isn't a baguette or bordeaux Smiley: sly

you may then drop food on the ground at your leisure and not worry about contamination until they resume work

Not this week, if it is moist and picks up cat hair, it goes into the trash. If it's like a cookie, 5 second rule.

No, but then i haven't dropped any food products on the floor either so i don't think that would help.

I'll eat pretty much anything that's fallen on the floor.

Having worked at McDonald's in my youth I observe the five second rule. My wife has her own variation: the five person rule. If no more than five people saw it hit the floor, it's still good.
