French Muslim war graves defaced

Vandals have desecrated 148 Muslim graves in France's biggest WWI cemetery, officials have said.

A pig's head was hung from one headstone and slogans insulting Islam and France's Muslim justice minister were daubed on other graves.

President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the attack as a "hateful act" and the "most inadmissible kind of racism".

About 78,000 colonial subjects of France, including many Muslims from North Africa, died in the war.

Now that's a blow for world peace right there. Smiley: disappointed

Nothing says "i'm a tough thug" like beating up a dead person. It's good to see our fascists are still brave and honourable...

The fact that muslims died fighting ze chermans for ze freench reminded me of the German War Cemetery near where I live. The graves of soliders, sailors and airmen who died on british soil fighting for Germany in WW1 & WW2. About 2,000 from ww1 and about 3,000 from ww2.

When I walk among the graves of WW1 soldiers, it's always doubly upsetiing to see how many Cohens, Goldblums and Zuckermans died fighting for the Kaiser in 1914-18 Smiley: disappointed

Oddly enough, quite a few graves from WW2 are Fitzpatricks, O'Shaghnessys and Donoghues.

If I saw anyone descrating their graves, let alone graves of my compatriots, I suspect I would physicalise my disgust.

well as the French army only seems to know how to retreat for the past 60+ years or so, maybe this is how they can fight...

It's unfortunately relatively common in France. All it takes is 2-3 drunken fascists-wannabes and some spray paint.

I still don't get why anyone would be a fascist in France. It's not like our experience with Hitler was that enjoyable.

The article I linked wrote:
The cemetery contains the graves of 2143 servicemen of the First World War.

To one side of the entrance vestibule are four large slabs, laid flat on the ground, surrounded by a low wall. These are the graves of the crews of the four airships shot down over the UK in 1916 and 1917. Each crew-member is commemorated by name and rank. Here lies the crew of SL 11, an army airship shot down over Hertfordshire by Lieut. William Leefe-Robinson, on 3rd September, 1916. Beside them lies the crew of L32, the first of the three naval airships, shot down over Billericay three weeks later. Then comes Kapitanleutnant Heinrich Mathy, the most audacious of all the raiders, buried with the crew of his ship, L31, brought down on 2nd October, 1916 at Potters Bar. Finally, here is the grave of the crew of L48, shot down over Theberton on 17th June, 1917

Apart from the Zeppelin Crews shot down over England, and a number of PoWs who we evacuated over here for hospitalisation, there were numerous land assaults.

I've attended the Rememberance Sunday service there for several years. Very moving.

Reminds me of when someone graffitied ROSBEEF on British graves over there. That was just a little bit funny.

Shocking that Irishmen would want to fight against the English. What could possibly have brought that on?

Don't worry! We're sending those to Afghanistan as part of the NATO operation.

If there's one missing in Taliban Afghanistan, it's fascists on rollerblades.

Wow, I just had a flashback to the last John Irving novel I read.

No, that's my childhood. Common mistake, it's very similar to an Irving novel.

The last John Irving book I read was the one they made into The Door in the Floor, I forget the book title off hand. It was good.
