No the guy with the gun out was a pussy. Ironically the guy who stood up to it was really kind of a dork... We never looked at him as quite sane after that. His exact words were "what are you gonna do with that, nigger?" He was just trying to provoke him.. I think he may have just been suicidal.

I find myself musing on the eccentricity of attitudes in the USA that lead to a modern civilised country that is the 'envy of the world' for its freedoms and human rights, to be so inexplicably possesive of the right to bear arms (even if that might mean your child gets shot in the face one day while at school, for his training shoes), whilst happily allowing the removal of the right to carry a bottle of water onto an aeroplane.....

You guys are so wierd.

thats actually just a ploy to bancrupt the corrupt french bottle water producing elite.

But yeah, we don't ban that stuff until people actually try to blow an airplane up with it.

I think the US should invade Britain. The time is ripe. We could probably take over using baseball bats and rocks at this point.

If they ban guns just build a rail gun. Sure it takes a while, but they are much cooler and more fun to use.

Hmm, yet another kneejerk law. Banning weapons will do nothing to stop violence. It will only change the form of the violence. No gun, use a sword, no sword, use a knife, no knife, use a bat, no bat, use a rock, no rocks, use a fist.

It will do something. It's much harder to rob a shop with your fists, or some rocks, than it is with a gun. It's much harder to slice someone's arm off if you can't walk around with a samurai sword.

Weapons are part of the problem. They are obviously not the whole problem, but they are part of it. It's much easier to police a place where carrying a weapon is a criminal offence, than one where you have to wait for the weapon to be used before a criminal offence has been committed.

I do agree it's "knee-jerk", but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It's already illegal to carry a samurai sword in the street in the UK. The only new thing with this particular law is that it becomes illegal to sell, import, make, or hire a samurai sword, unless you're a collector. Who loses out from this?

I can only hope this isn't brought into effect in Scotland...
I personally own a couple of these "cheap replicas" just to border my real collection with. But normally when they say "England and Wales" they only mean England and Wales, Scottish laws are thankfully seperate.

Quick! Ban Hedgehogs!

Quote:
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- A New Zealand man has been accused of assault with a prickly weapon -- a hedgehog.

Police allege that William Singalargh, 27, picked up the hedgehog and threw it at a 15-year-old boy in the North Island east coast town of Whakatane on February 9.

"It hit the victim in the leg, causing a large, red welt and several puncture marks," police Senior Sgt. Bruce Jenkins said Monday. The teen did not need medical treatment, he added.

Police arrested Singalargh shortly after the incident, and charged him with assault with a weapon -- "namely the hedgehog," Jenkins said.

At a hearing in Whakatane District Court on February 14, Singalargh's lawyer said he intended to plead innocent, The Herald on Sunday newspaper reported. The case is due to resume on April 17. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison, Jenkins said.

"People often get charged with assault for throwing things at other people," Jenkins said, although he admitted the use of a hedgehog as a weapon was "uncommon."

It was unclear if he also would face animal cruelty charges. The Herald said the hedgehog was dead when it was collected as evidence, but did not know if it was dead or alive at the time of the alleged attack.

The Herald reported Singalargh's arrest under the headline "Raise your hands and step away from the hedgehog."

Do you really think criminals are going to say "It's illegal to own a gun now. I should get rid of my gun"? No. What it will do is allow the many criminals and only the few (relativly) cops access to weapons.

How exactly does that make it a safer society?

Because ******, if it's ilegal to own, carry, sell and buy a gun the chances of you actually getting hold of one is infinately more difficult.

Go Google gun crime rates in America Vs UK and you can plainly see the Law working as intended.

Make it much harder for people who'd like to be criminals to commit their first crime. Slaughtering 20 fellow students at their school before killing themselves, for instance.

This isn't the first time that argument has been used, and it has been debunked many times. Most people who have an illegal weapon got it while it was illegal. I.e never registered. Do you think gun laws stopped these guns from being smuggled in? When firearms are imported or manufactured, the ATF requires registration. Most illegal weapons are unable to be traced. It's true that strict gun laws may make it harder for formally law abiding citizens who are of legal age to purchase weapons obtain them. But when you speak of school shootings (high school and not college), these kids were not of legal age and obtained the guns illegally.

And why do you attack me personally. Are you really threatened by the fact that I have an opinion that is different from yours. I truly hope it's just because you are having a bad morning and not because you are that insecure.

As I stated before, when you add the per capita factor into the equation, there isn't that much of a difference.

It's 27 time lower. Stop wasting everyone's time.

Thanks.

Washington, DC has a UK-like ban on handguns, and it has the highest murder rate in the US, by far. Right across the river, Arlington, Virginia, has a murder rate lower than that in London. Virginia has no handgun ban, and allows any lawful citizen that passes a training course to carry a concealed handgun in public. Now, you tell me-- does gun control really reduce crime?

The idea that gun control can be thwarted by criminals importing guns from another part of the country is obviously bunk. Look at the UK, which passed a comprehensive ban on handguns in 1997. There are no areas of the UK where handguns are available; it is a national ban, the same type that the architects of DC's high crime rate (the gun banners) want to bring to the whole US. And even with that in mind, the UK's murder rate is soaring, with some UK cities being considerably more dangerous than many US cities where handguns are legal.
