something. It's much harder to rob a shop with your fists, or some rocks, than it is with a gun. It's much harder to slice someone's arm off if you can't walk around with a samurai sword.
Weapons are part of the problem. They are obviously not the whole problem, but they are part of it. It's much easier to police a place where carrying a weapon is a criminal offence, than one where you have to wait for the weapon to be used before a criminal offence has been committed.
I do agree it's "knee-jerk", but that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. It's already illegal to carry a samurai sword in the street in the UK. The only new thing with this particular law is that it becomes illegal to sell, import, make, or hire a samurai sword, unless you're a collector. Who loses out from this?
