Wow, Nexa you may have just set my goals for graduate school. I never really considered the sizeable benefits to being a TA before.

Thank you very much.

Plus it's fun. It's a lot of work, though, and you have to get over the terror of public speaking.

Don't be afraid to ask for help!

can do. will be asking in a week or so. does it have to be filed BEFORE April 15th like taxes?

No, but you should do it as early as possible. At this point, waiting one more week won't likely matter. The cut off isn't until next June, but many schools have an "early" deadline for the best aid. For example, mine was March 1st. Anyone applying after that date would be very unlikely to be awarded work study, for example.

It varies from place to place though. Also, it's never too late for Pell Grants if you qualify.

ahh thank you good to know.

links so i can learn more about grants and what not for schooling. i found my old paper work from when i graduated HS (20 years ago) and it has an address i can get my records from so i do not have to bother with getting a GED on top of my HS dep. yeah me. that is if the gov. has done its job and can FIND my bloody transcripts.

bad thing about graduating from a DodDS (department of dependent defense school) is my records are moved from one archive to an other and continually get shuffled around...

i was able to take this 1 class this semester as my college does not require transcripts for 1 class, but after that i MUST have them.

First off, have you filed a FAFSA?

Anyone who hasn't yet, see old thread here (hush Darqflame). At the very end is a link to a primer if you need it.

Well, generally they require that you answer them by a certain date, so make sure you do that. Have you applied for financial aid yet?

Oh, and congratulations!

Thanks! I'm kinda nervous about it now. I haven't applied for financial aid because the site isn't let me in yet. I guess I have to wait for my account to be authorized or something. The school also requires a deposit, but I'm not sure how to send that in. The app fee had a link to use a CC on.

What do you mean the site isn't letting you in? Are you using www.fafsa.ed.gov?

Send a check or money order for the deposit.

Oh no, FAFSA is okay, but the school's financial aid office wants me to go through a separate web site. They gave me a school email and I had to set a password, but that wouldn't work yet.

OH! They probably just do their verification process online...or it's possible that they also have a supplemental form. FAFSA is the most important part though, so I'm glad you have that done.

I just started looking into educational/health doctoral programs with available teaching assistanceship positions. I don't suppose anyone has a school/program they might be able to recommend?

School I go to requires a separate financial aid application done through their on-line site. It's for school sponsored grants, allows you access to major specific grants, etc.

They won't fully process your app until you have done this.

I haven't finished FAFSA, but I'll have it done tomorrow. I don't have all my dad's tax info tonight and he's busy. But thank you for all the help Nexa, I wouldn't have applied without you giving me info.

Good, finish it, and remember next year that you can USE AN ESTIMATE and then go back in later and update it. Do it as soon after January 1st as you can next year and use check stubs or a rough estimate for the income. Schools look at the date you filed as part of the awarding process and the earlier, the better (after Jan 1).

Yeah, it's usually best to file your FAFSA as soon after January 1st as possible, and remember to send the schools you're interested in the application. ;) They usually have their own financial aid as well, and if you're going to graduate school you may also be eligible for need-based or academic-based scholarships; but they also look at your FAFSA when determining some of those things. :)

I'm going back to school this fall and I was lucky enough to get a full tuition remission scholarship, but I'll probably still be living in a cardboard box for a while.

Got my FAFSA completed now. The school sent me a letter and booklet today, with an envelope to mail my deposit. $100 :x Guess its worth it though. I'm going to see a friend on campus tomorrow, maybe she'll show me to the financial aid office or somewhere important.
