Public Service Announcement to college students and would be college students:

Filing for financial aid is free. If you get a letter from "College Financial Advisory" or ANY other company offering to file for financial aid for you for a price, it's a ******* scam...DO NOT send them money.

These scams run every year about this time, but they seem particularly wide spread this year. Spread the word if you know anyone that might be targeted.

If you don't mind a question Nexa, do you happen to know anything about Financial Aid for graduate school? Is it mostly similar to undergrad, or are there fewer opportunities or different processes?

Higher stafford loan amounts are available to graduate students, but you're not going to get as much "free money" with one exception: If at all possible, get a graduate assistantship. Many will require federal work study (so make sure you apply for it), but not all. Most graduate assistantships will pay your tuition, pay a healthcare premium, pay you a stipend, and give you work experience for the old resume as well as possibly endearing your to some professors should you get a teaching assistantship.

Wow, Nexa you may have just set my goals for graduate school. I never really considered the sizeable benefits to being a TA before.

Thank you very much.

Graduating with the ability to already put teaching experience on your resume (if that's a field you're looking into at all) is pretty great. Additionally, if it is a concern of yours at all, often times graduate assistantships in res life (like Resident Directors and such) offer a free apartment in the dorms on top of the tuition assistance, though the amount of any additional stipend is low. They usually include a meal plan too though.

Oh and Allegory, if this is for next year, get on it right away...usually they decide on fall placements in mid to late spring.

If you go to a undergrad/grad school, try to get a job teaching some of the undergrad classes. The professors will love you, looks good on the ole resume, and most pay a bit of popcorn and ramen noodles money.

I just got my college application in last week. I started filing for FAFSA but I put it off. Should I finish it now or wait to see if I get accepted?
#15 Apr 04 2008 at 9:10 PM Rating: Decent
Sooner the better. And you can change the schools they send it to later if you don't get accepted where you want and decide to go to a different school.

No, but you should do it as early as possible. At this point, waiting one more week won't likely matter. The cut off isn't until next June, but many schools have an "early" deadline for the best aid. For example, mine was March 1st. Anyone applying after that date would be very unlikely to be awarded work study, for example.

It varies from place to place though. Also, it's never too late for Pell Grants if you qualify.

Is there any dis/advantages to declaring a major as a freshman? My friend turned in his application through mail and I did mine online with a declared major. He was accepted undeclared last week and mine is still pending. The lady I talked to at the college said online usually got processed faster, and I really feel like I'd get more out of college than my friend.

Financially? No, not really, except in very specific circumstances (or if you're applying for a major specific scholarship, obviously). There are pros and cons to both declaring and being undeclared as a freshman, but I think you're essentially asking why he's accepted already, and you're not. My guess would be that it's easy to accept an undeclared student because they only have to pass through the admissions office and meet their requirements and limitations. If you've declared, it may be in a program with so many slots or whatever and so your application has to go through the added trial of that program's committee/admissions person/whathave you. I wouldn't worry about it, it's early yet.

Well, the reason I'm worrying is because we were gonna go together. Then his parents made him go this year, so I was rushing to get everything done in the two weeks before deadline. The application said that if I declare a major and its full, most of the time they'll let me change to undeclared. I'm just worried that since I was so close to the deadline that I might not even get that chance.

sorry for /derail from financial.

I would call the head of the department you're hoping to major in and ask him what's up wit dat. I wouldn't phrase it that way though. Explain that if the program is full, you'd be happy to change to undeclared and then reapply for the major at a later date when there are openings and ask him or her what the appropriate course of action is. If they're no help, go to the dean of the college.

Okay, I'll do that when I get a chance next week, since I'm sure nobody wants to talk work on the weekend. The online application says I can submit corrections while its being processed, but I don't think thats a good idea 'cause it might set it back or I might actually get in to a major.

Again, thanks for the help.

Just filled out my FAFSA for the 2008-09 year the other day. I hope I get big money. Smiley: grin

All I got last semester was a stinking $228; some money is better than none I guess. Hopefully more money now since I'll be full time from here on out.

Yay, good luck! Be sure to stop in to the schools financial aid office sometime this summer to find scholarships to apply for for the 2009-2010 school year (deadline for most of next years has passed...not that you couldn't check anyway)!

Yeah I went in to talk about declaring my intent to transfer to UW-Madison Wednesday. I've been applying for some scholarships online but I lack time. Apparently I talk about work too much so never mind. I was in a bit of a hurry so I need to stop in Tuesday after class to speak to her again.

Also have my Summer classes all picked out. Just have to wait for April 14th to register.

Edit: Grats on 8k! Smiley: yippee
