Apparently some Florida teens believe drinking bleach will prevent HIV infection. I suppose it would, if you drank enough.

teh article wrote:
ORLANDO, Fla. -- A recent survey that found some Florida teens believe drinking a cap of bleach will prevent HIV and a shot of Mountain Dew will stop pregnancy has prompted lawmakers to push for an overhaul of sex education in the state.

The survey showed that Florida teens also believe that smoking marijuana will prevent a person from getting pregnant.

State lawmakers said the myths are spreading because of Florida's abstinence-only sex education, Local 6 reported.

They are proposing a bill that would require a more comprehensive approach, the report said.

It would still require teaching abstinence but students would also learn about condoms and other methods of birth control and disease prevention.

The bill just passed its first vote in a committee, Local 6 reported.

A friend and I just sent Obama a copy of America's War on Sex by Marty Klein.

I think I should start a campaign to send it to everyone on the Senate and in the House, but I don't think they'd care, it being all full of facts and ****.

You know, even if you do teach 'abstinence only,' where's the harm in informing kids about everything that's involved?

I'd think being knowledgeable about AIDS and STDs and pregnancy and whatnot might actually discourage kids from having premarital sex.

I deduce from this that the trend of girls being more educated than boys is being bucked in Florida.

I deduce that, while less educated, the boy's know that a shot of the good stuff is a surefire winner when trying to get the lady's to put out.

You know, when I was a teen, if I was presented with a survey that asked if drinking bleach was a viable way to prevent pregnancy, I probably would have chosen it for ***** and giggles.

Florida teachers should follow the examples of these ladies (A comprihensive guide of teachers who've slept with students!) and SHOW them how it's done.

The world will be a better place, for it.

I was stationed in Florida for 3 years. If some of the teens there drank bleach, we'd all likely be better off.

The best abstinance-only education for girls would be a tour through an abortion clinic, but fat chance of anyone ever realizing THAT.

Here's another recent study on the topic: Comprehensive Sex Ed Cuts Teen Pregnancies

For the lazy, my favorite bits (all directly from the article):

*Students who receive comprehensive sex education are half as likely to become teen parents as those who get none or abstinence-only sex education

*Teens who had comprehensive education, which typically discusses condoms and birth-control methods as well as abstinence, were no more likely to engage in intercourse than peers who were taught just to say no to sex before
marriage

*The federal government has endorsed abstinence-only programs for more than a decade. Congress has spent more than $1.5 billion since 1996 on the Title V Abstinence Education Program, and recently renewed it through June 30. Conservative groups, including The Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based think tank, contend that abstinence programs help delay sexual activity and reduce illegitimate births

*Compared with other developed nations, Americans have higher rates of teen pregnancy, abortion rates and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases

One of my friends just finished her Ph.D and her dissertation research was a comparison of comprehensive sexual education and sexuality education (and by that I mean, throughout the life by family/friends/society/school/etc) between women in the Netherlands (industrialized country with the lowest rates of teen pregnancy) and the U.S. (industrialized country with the highest rates of teen pregnancy). Not only are the results consistent with the above article, but the lifelong misery we condemn people to in this country through continual messages from infancy to adulthood that sexual feelings are wrong, that your body is disgusting, etc, just make me sick.

I'd have to see the actual surveys themselves, rather then reports about them. The language used in both of those links are pretty squirrelly IMO...

Careful, Nexa. Applying logic to the abstinence-only sex ed equation might just hamper our government's long and glorious tradition of throwing good money after bad.

I don't plan on teaching my daughters that sex is for whores. I'll just cut to the chase and put them on the pill when they're 11 and start saving up for abortions.

Our sex education is pretty eloborate, including even demonstrating some sex toys and what you cant and cannot do. (reminds me of the awful super-abdominal-away-9000 pool cleaner stories i wish ive never read :P)
You get a "light" version on school when youre 12 and the eloborate version when youre 16, at least when i went to school which was a decade ago.

That and we have pregnancy pill in the basic health insurance package, the vast majority of girls take them when they are 14-16.

Most of the abstinence only stuff is truly shameful though, I'm all for expressing your preferences that someone wait to have sex for whatever your moral code dictates is acceptable. I'm horrified by the outright lies that are being spread in schools where children are supposed to learn crazy things like facts. They teach that condoms aren't effective against STDs, so kids don't bother using them, for example.

The reason many teens are on the bill has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with the fact that periods can be yucky, miserable, and irregular for many women. Once every 28 days is bad enough, but without the pill my cycle is more like once every 22 days, for a full ******* week. The pill keeps me NORMAL. Not getting pregnant is a side effect that didn't become relevant until I was 21 >_>;
