I call it the Kevin Costner effect.

Hey, I hate Costner as much the next guy (Nexa owns the Dances with Wolves extended DVD!!) but compared to Hayden, he's Phillip Seymor Hoffman.

but not sure Penn would be as high)

I think he's underrated. He suffers from overindulgent directors allowing him to take boring characters all the way to full boring, though. Thin Red Line, All the Kings Men, etc.

And mostly agree with Smash's list (but not sure Penn would be as high)

On second thought, though you could replace him with Christian Bale. He may be the most underrated actor working.

My fourth grade teacher is married to the man that edited that movie. He won an Oscar for it, then he did an interview for our elementary school paper. It was cool when I got to hold the thing. Being it fourth grade, it felt heavy to me. Incidentally, my older brother got to hold the man's Emmy he won for editing Roots.

The problem with Kevin Costner is he plays the same characters. My father is a fan so I've seen many of his movies. They are all the exact same character just with a different name and era.

He just plays Kevin Costner. There's no acting involved. Also he has bizarre taste in scripts. If I wanted to make some quick money, I'd pen a screenplay about a retired baseball player who restores humanity's faith by playing catch across a nuclear wasteland.

Really? I think he's generally considered a talented actor. A little prone to cheekiness, maybe, but certainly talented. Freeman just isn't and apparently has a serious drug problem or something judging by the scripts he's taken recently.

There are a few US/canuck actors who appear able to drift from wooden to awesome, and it's often hard to pin it down to directors, script, production or editing.

Mel Gibson springs to mind, along with Donald Sutherland, Alan Alda, Brad Pitt and Barack Obama.

As for consistent ones, I would include Smash's list, and add Danny DeVito (laugh all you want), Morgan Freeman, and even Matt Damon. Even in movies that aren't my cup of tea, they appear to give performances that do exactly what's asked for.

My No 1 over-rated actor?

Jeff Gold(tortuous pause. . . . . . . . . . . .)blum

Noooo. Bad, yes. Worst? Not close. Wild Hogs? Daddy Day Camp? Rise of the Silver Surfer?

Worst movie that made 100M or more maybe.

I have him in the same category as Jim Carrey, Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy - comedians who make movies. Not actors.

There are exceptions to the comedian -> actor transitions. . . Robin Williams (although not conistent)

No way. Harvey Kietel. No one ranks Jeff Goldblum as a great actor.

Largest fall off from talented youth? Al "I CONVEY EMOTION SOLELY BY SCREAMING NOW!!" Paccino.

Sadly it's over ten years since he was good in anything.

Devil Advocate maybe, but then he wasn't exactly opposite a giant in Keenu "I should have stuck to bill and ted" Reeves.

So Heat? that was 95...

Son of a *****... I just laughed so hard I sprayed diet coke all over my Jack Russell terrier.

I'll add Keanu Reeves to the block of wood school of acting. Maybe we can get a bonfire going.

I'll agree with that one. I love Paccino in his earlier works. Anytime I see a preview with him in it now I cringe.

Actually they made Johnny Numonic into a movie in the 90's.

In which also starred another of the world's most popular non-actors.

Was that Harvey Keitel in The Piano? If so, I agree. If I could get that emotional about a guy with chickenwaist, that's saying something.

I like Harvey Keitel Smiley: frown. Bad Lieutenant was one of my favourite films when I was 15-16.

I can't believe you guys didn't mention Tom Cruise. Though maybe its because no one rates him anymore. Talk about someone playing himself. Tom Cruise only ever play Tom Cruise. Born on the 4th July was just a tad less eye-gouging then the rest I guess, but still, he's always a good reason not to go see a movie.
