Like a number of nations, China has an appalling Human Rights record, and the current smack-downs in Tibet are raising the profile of their regime.

And as they're hosting the 'lympics, I'm reminded of 1980 when USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics in protest at the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (the Taliban were 'freedom fighters' back then). Maggie Thatcher tried to boycott too, but most Brit athletes broke it and went anyway. Thanks to USA's absence, we won stuff. Yay!

So, anywho. . .

Should there be a boycott of the Olympics in protest at the Chinese regime?
No, because the Olympics is about sport, not politics:12 (30.0%)
Yes - we should not give these extremist bastages the endorsement:10 (25.0%)
No, because China is no worse an offender than many western states.:7 (17.5%)
I'll have Nos. 16, 27, 31, 57 and extla flied lice:11 (27.5%)
Total:40

Even if we did boycott the Olympics, what would it matter? It's not really a statement considering almost everything we buy is made in China and they own half our country via Bush's debt.

The chances of this administration boycotting these Olympics is precisely zero. It wouldn't matter at all if China decided to vivisect the Dali Lama as part of the opening ceremonies. We're completely beholden to China politically, financially, and economically.

Well, there might be Tibetan terrorists attacks. Suicide-prayers. Remotely detonated road-side chanting. I wouldn't be surprised if they used weapons of mass meditation, even.

As for the boycott, it's ridiculous. Like Smash said, it's never gonna happen. Ever. It's pure political posturing. If countries were really opposed to it, why not do something about it when Beijing applied for the games, and when the decision to award them the games was being taken? Why didn't Sarko raise the matter 4 months ago when he went to China to sign contracts worth billions of pounds? Oh, that's right, cos he was signing contracts worth billions of pounds.

And even then, China is arguably no worse than many Western countries. They execute but so do we, they torture but so do we, they help maintain corrupt and murderous regimes by buying their natural ressources but so do we. They haven't invaded a foreign country to take their oil though, so they're obviously slow learners.

I'll chime in with Grady and Smash to say that perhaps ethically, it's the correct choice, but would be completely pointless as a gesture and would probably hurt us economically.

What Smash said.

I am interested to see whether or not the sportsmen and -women who have been putting this on the media agena decide to NOT pick up their golden medal if they should win one, though.

Of course sport and politics should not get mixed up. But sport and drugs, or sport and national/international economics shouldn't get mixed up either. The Olympics is a mess of all of the above, and as such I have no interest in the whole event.

But, I've met the Dalai Llama a number of times, and he's a really really REALLY nice bloke who just wants the best for Tibet and the world in general.

So I voted that the Chinese ought to be told to **** off with their drug riddled, exercise in economics and efforts at international social acceptability, dressed up as sport, that is the modern Olympic Games.

But thats just me......

Honestly, who cares what they do. They could tear off their pants to reveal a Tibetan codpiece and nothing would change. Gee, which is more supporting of China's human rights affronts--withdrawing their MNF status or some random athlete making a "statement" based on their five-minute Google search of Tibet+China? Bandwagon Politics for Dummies.

Quit with the politically-oriented Games threads. Since no one asked, I'll be watching gymastics to see all those powerful freak dudes and women with muscles in their vags, curling because those fans get super-crazy over a nonsensical sport, and wrestling in the hopes a singlet will fail and reveal a strengthy ********.

I'd think he'd be creaming himself over Tibet's chances at reinserting their hamster authoritarian caste system.

I was taught Buddhist Meditation at UVa by one of the Lama's assistants, who was a really really nice white motherfucker. I still would rather watch 18-year old women who are 70 pounds slip on the balance beam revealing thier gender than some moron Western faglete "repping" Tibet. Pooh!

Sean Astin was amazing in the LOTR trilogy. It's a crime that he didn't get an Oscar nod for his totally awesome acting! Btw.

The olympics became uninteresting once I made it past the 5th grade. Once I realized that Mary Lou sold her soul to wheaties, I was crushed and never looked back.

There is no such thing as being an amateur athlete anymore.

Nor should there be. That concept was outdated about 50 years ago.
